The opaque layer (24) can be any suitable organic or inorganic material operable for obscuring the pixel sites (16), the opaque layer (24) being capable of selective removal or ablation for rendering the selected color elements (18, 20, 22) visible.

A laminar thermal imaging medium is prepared from a first element comprising a first sheet transparent to image-forming radiation and having at least a surface zone or layer of polymeric material heat-activatable upon subjection of the thermal imaging medium to brief and intense radiation, the first element carrying a layer of porous or particulate image-forming substance having cohesivity in excess of its adhesivity for the polymeric heat-activatable layer, and, on the opposed side of the layer of porous or particulate image-forming substance from the surface zone or layer, a first layer of adhesive, and a second element comprising a second sheet carrying a second layer of adhesive. The second layer of adhesive comprises a polymeric hardenable adhesive comprising a macromolecular organic binder having acidic groups, and a photopolymerizable monomer. The first and second elements are laminated together with the first and second layers of adhesive in contact with one another, so forming a unitary laminar medium in which the hardenable adhesive remains in its unhardened condition and serves to reduce the tendency for the unitary laminar medium to delaminate on application of stresses to the medium. Only a short lag time, typically about 10-90 seconds, is required between lamination and curing of the hardenable adhesive in order to provide a strong bond between the two elements following curing.

A process for forming a dot image on a recording medium which has a surface having a characteristic in which a receding contact angle decreases when the recording medium is heated in a condition where the recording medium is in contact with a liquid. The process includes in an arbitrary order the following steps (a) and (b) of: (a) selectively heating the surface of the recording medium so that one or a plurality of heated areas are formed on the surface of the recording medium in accordance with image information, the size of each heated area being controlled in accordance with the image information; and (b) bringing a liquid to the surface of the recording medium, wherein the receding contact angle of each heated area decreases so that a latent image corresponding to one or the plurality of the heated areas is formed on the surface of the recording medium. An apparatus for forming a dot image operates in accordance with the above process.

In image formation, a reversible thermosensitive medium, preferably in the form of an endless belt, is selectively heated in accordance with an electrical image signal, so that the areas of the thermosensitive belt will have different transmittances corresponding to the respective pixels of the image signal. A photosensitive member, preferably in the form of a drum, widely employed in electrophotography, is uniformly charged, and the thermosensitive belt is then superimposed on the photosensitive drum, and the photosensitive drum is exposed to light of a uniform intensity through the thermosensitive belt. The intensity of light which each area of the photosensitive drum receives depends of the transmittance of the corresponding area of the thermosensitive belt. An electrostatic image that is formed on the photosensitive drum as a result of the exposure is therefore a conversion from the transmittance image on the thermosensitive belt. A toner image may then be developed and transferred and fixed on recording paper.
