Nylon-11 monomer, 11-aminoundecanoic acid, is synthesized from 12-oxododecanoic acid oxime in a three-step reaction sequence which involves a Beckmann rearrangement, Hofmann degradation and hydrolysis. The aldoxime acid is hydrolyzed in the presence of nickel acetate tetrahydrate to give 11-carbamoylundecanoic acid. This amide is then treated with a solution of sodium methoxide and bromine at 70.degree.-80.degree. C. to give 11-(methoxycarbonylamino)undecanoic acid, which upon basic hydrolysis and subsequent neutralization, yields the 11-aminoundecanoic acid.

A new process is described for the production of 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexane acetic acid, a pharmaceutical agent used as an anticonvulsant. For this purpose a (1-cyanocyclohexyl)-malonic acid dialkyl ester is decarbalkoxylated to the corresponding (1-cyanocyclohexyl)acetic acid alkyl ester, then transesterified with a benzyl alcohol and finally hydrogenated to form the end product.

Scrap poly(ethyleneterephthalate) is converted to useful amine and diamine monomers such as para-xylylenediamine, 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane and 4-aminomethyl benzoic acid for the production of various polyamides. The conversion of poly(ethyleneterephthalate) to diamine monomers is achieved by a three step process involving (a) ammonolysis of the poly(ethyleneterephthalate) to produce terephthalamide and ethylene glycol; (b) pyrolytic dehydration of the terephthalamide to produce terephthalonitrile; and (c) hydrogenation of the terephthalonitrile to produce the para-xylylene diamine and/or 1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane. The conversion of poly(ethyleneterephthalate) to 4-aminomethyl benzoic acid involves the steps of (a) ammonolysis of the poly(ethyleneterephthalate) to produce terephthalamide; (b) partial pyrolytic dehydration of said terephthalamide to produce 4-cyanobenzoic acid; and (c) hydrogenation of said 4-cyanobenzoic acid to produce 4-aminomethylbenzoic acid. The process of the present invention permits the conversion of low value PET scrap such as beverage bottles, fibers and film to relatively high value and relatively pure diamine monomers and ethylene glycol.

This invention relates to a process for converting cellulose to amino acids by radiofrequency plasma of nitrogen and hydrogen gases. Cellulose is placed between the electrodes in a radiofrequency plasma reaction chamber which is sealed and maintained at a reduced pressure. Hydrogen and nitrogen mixture is bled through the chamber and sufficient radiofrequency electric current applied until the cellulose is consumed, thereby producing a mixture of amino acids. The cellulose can be either cotton or wood derivatives.

Compounds of formula wherein n is 0 or 1, R1 and R2 are H, C1- 5 alkyl, C1- 6 alkanoyl, or alkoxyalkyl, or together form CH2, Z is CH2 or CO and X is -C(CH3)(NO2) -CO2R3 (R3 = C1- 5 alkyl), are prepared by reacting the halide of the above formula (X = Br or Cl) with HC(CH3)(NO2)CO2R3. The products may be reduced to corresponding amino-esters of said formula, wherein Z is CH2 or CHOH, and X is -C(CH3)(NH2)CO2R3.
