Abstract: A rack shaft support device is provided for rack and pinion steering of the type having a housing containing a pinion rotatable by the rotating operation of a steering wheel and a rack shaft engaged with the pinion and axially movable by the rotation thereof to steer wheels. The device comprises an antifriction support including an antifriction roller contacting the rack shaft, a mechanism biasing the antifriction support toward the pinion, a vibration absorbing member urged against the antifriction member and absorbing vibration of the rack shaft by friction, and a limiting member disposed concentrically about the rack shaft and limiting transverse displacement of the rack shaft to a predetermined amount.

Abstract: A steering box for a motor vehicle comprises a rotatable toothed pinion, an axially movable rack within a casing, and a support unit to support the thrust which the pinion applies to the rack during operation. The support unit comprises a rotatable roller operable to support the rack. The roller is provided with an axial hold in which is formed a pair of rolling tracks for rolling bodies. A pair of rings are disposed within the hole in contact with one another, each forming with the roller the rolling tracks for the rolling bodies. Two rings of the rolling bodies are disposed between the roller and the rings. A pin supports the rings. The pin is mounted in a cylindrical body provided with a central cavity operable to house the roller, at least patially. The cylindrical body is provided with a pair of slots each of which is able to receive one end of the pin.

Abstract: Parallel ball bearing arrays are utilized in a pressure support means for a rack to reduce friction of a stationary pressure means supporting a moving rack in engagement with a drive pinion. The rack and a pressure pad have face to face coacting ball races on each side of the rack and so oriented that median planes of a pair of facing races are at an angle to the median plane of the rack. Accordingly, a train of balls on each side of the rack in the respective pair of coacting races has a median plane at an angle to the median plane of the rack on each side of the rack. Such orientation gives support normal to the rack and laterally as well, at the area where the rack engages the pinion.

Abstract: A slide way bearing is capable of bearing the load, imposed on a track shaft of the bearing, from all directions. The bearing has oval shaped ball raceways having transversely curved load-bearing surfaces corresponding to the curvature of the balls. The track shaft has angularly spaced ribs extending in parallel relation longitudinally thereof, and each disposed between a pair of race ways. The race ways are formed by cooperating grooves in the inner surface of a sleeve and in the outer surface of a ball retainer, the ball retainer being telescoped in the sleeve and embracing that portion of the track shaft projecting upwardly above a bed. The sleeve, the ball retainer and the ribs are relatively arranged in the manner such that the balls in the race ways, when adjacent the ribs, are in load bearing contact with the track shaft, the sleeve and the ribs and, when in other portions of the race way, are out of contact with the track shaft and the ribs and are free of load.
