A method of setting up an electrostatographic printing machine having image quality attributes and parameters that control the attributes using multivariate modeling and multiobjective optimization. The method includes providing a discrete number of parameter settings and printing test patterns based upon the parameter settings. The test patterns are scanned to produce a set of image quality values. Using a multivariate adaptive regression splines technique, a model of the printing machine image quality is provided in response to the parameter settings and the image quality values. Optimum parameter settings for the printing machine are then determined from the discrete number of parameter settings to produce consistent image quality.

Methods of and apparatus for compensating electrostatic printing process stations for residual toner voltage. A toner patch is produced on a photoreceptor. That toner patch and a section of the untoned photoreceptor are then charged and exposed so as to produce a first latent image. The residual voltage between the exposed toner patch and the exposed section of the untoned photoreceptor is then determined. At least one processing station is then adjusted to compensate for the determined residual toner voltage. Process stations which can be adjusted include development stations, exposure stations and charging stations.

Measurement of attributes of the toner patch located on the transfer member can be used to monitor characteristics of the toner image formation process so that the toner development process can be appropriately controlled. These measurements can be used to improve the toner development process stability, and thus maintain superior print quality. The toner patch attributes measured include, for example, the voltage and the mass of the toner patch. Toner patch voltage is measured by an electrostatic voltmeter located adjacent to the transfer member. Toner patch mass is measured by one or more densitometers for measuring the developed toner patch mass, the transferred toner patch mass, and/or residual toner patch mass.

The specification discloses apparatus by which multiple reproductions can be produced from an original, all reproductions from the same original being of substantially identical quality. An electrographic machine substantially uniformly charges an electrographic recording member to a predetermined initial voltage and imagewise exposes the charged recording member at a nominal exposure level to produce a latent charge image. The initial voltage level and the exposure level are process control parameters of the machine, which also includes a biased electrode for controlling deposition of toner to the latent charge image. Signals are produced and stored having values characteristic of (1) the level of at least one of the parameters and (2) the bias voltage level which are associated with a desired reproduction quality of an original. A comparison signal is produced by taking the signal values of the sensed parameters associated with latent charge images of successive reproductions of an original and comparing them with the stored signal values for the corresponding latent charge images of the same original. The bias voltage level associated with the latent charge image is varied in response to the comparison signal, thereby producing a developed image having substantially the same upright quality as that produced by the stored signal values.

An image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided that determine a final contrast potential taking into consideration not only the relationship between the contrast potential of an electrostatic latent image and the density value of a developed image but also a toner charge amount for developing the electrostatic latent image. To accomplish this, the image forming apparatus of the present invention predicts, in advance, the contrast potential of the electrostatic latent image and the density of the toner image at the contrast potential for a predetermined toner charge amount. Furthermore, the image forming apparatus forms an image by adjusting the relationship between the contrast potential and density measured in advance based on a current toner charge amount and a saturation toner charge amount when forming the image.
