Abstract: There is disclosed a gas discharge device containing at least two electrodes, at least one of the electrodes being insulated from the gas by a dielectric member. There is particularly disclosed a multiple gaseous discharge display/memory panel having an electrical memory and capable of producing a visual display, the panel being characterized by an ionizable gaseous medium in a gas chamber formed by a pair of opposed dielectric material charge storage members, each of which is respectively backed by an array of electrodes, the electrodes behind each dielectric material member being oriented with respect to the electrodes behind the opposing dielectric material member so as to define a plurality of discrete discharge units.At least one dielectric insulating member contains a predetermined beneficial amount of a source of at least one element selected from P, As, Sb, or Bi.The selected element or elements may be utilized in any suitable form, such as a compound, mineral, and/or elemental. Likewise, it may be incorporated into the dielectric by any suitable means, including being applied as a layer within the dielectric or on the surface thereof.

Abstract: A gas-discharge display panel comprises plural elongated minute gas-discharge cells arranged in matrix directly on inner faces of front and rear insulator plates, on opposite sides of which cells elongated anodes and cathodes are disposed respectively and which cells are driven by igniting pulses, sustaining pulse-trains and erasing pulses in response to picture signals to be displayed. In these cells glows appear closely by both of anodes and cathodes and excite fluorescent layers which are disposed on cell-walls at the closest distance, so that very high brightness and efficiency of gas-discharge display can be obtained with a simple structure, and further a memory function of gas-discharge can be effected by virtue of the sustaining pulse-trains.

Abstract: In driving gas panel or plasma display devices, characters are generated on the panel display as a sequence of dots by applying appropriate drive signals to selected orthogonal conductors, each conductor requiring an associated driver. In a low character count small plasma display such as a single row display utilizing a 5.times.7 dot character matrix, a significant load is presented to the horizontal drivers, while a substantial number of drivers are required to drive the vertical axis. To improve the load distribution and increase the drive efficiency of such a system, the horizontal conductors are divided into four distinct groups, with associated drivers, while a single set of vertical conductors is used to drive the vertical conductors, which are positioned to intersect each of the groups of horizontal conductors. The individual load requirements as well as the number of vertical drivers are reduced by a factor of four at a nominal increase in the number of horizontal drivers, thereby providing a significant cost reduction. The specific wiring pattern used to achieve this result on a plasma display device is disclosed herein.

Abstract: For the decoupling between drive lines 9 for applying the firing and extinguishing pulses and supply lines 7 for supplying the sustain voltage, as well as for firing and maintaining discharges in gas discharge display devices, electrodes 2 are applied via conductive multi-layer zones 3 of the surrounding dielectric layer 4, from the supply lines 7 and also via counter-plates provided on the surface of the dielectric layer 4. The counter-plates are interconnected by lines 9, and form with associated counter-electrodes, respective capacitors in which one counter-plate vertical row can represent a first coordinate while the second coordinate may be formed by time-defined shifting of this vertical row of counter-plates in a direction which is vertical with respect to its extension. If instead of a linear displacement of the counter-plate row, there is an angular displacement round a fixed center of rotation, a planar coordinate image display representation may be formed which is advantageous in cases of displays covered by rotating scanning elements such as, for example, radar systems.

Abstract: A gaseous discharge display and/or memory device comprises a pair of sealed glass plates having metallic conductor arrays formed thereon and insulated from contact with the gas by a dielectric layer. The crossover points of the conductors define the locations of the individual cells which are controlled by selective application of write, sustain, and erase signals. To permit uniform operation of individual cells, the plates must be maintained precisely spaced over their entire display surface. To effect this requirement in a large size panel, metallic spacers are secured to the upper surface of the conductors of the metallic conductor arrays prior to the formation of the dielectric layer, the size and number of these spacers being determined by the geometry and resolution of the gaseous discharge display device.

Abstract: A gas discharge panel includes several pairs of column (X) electrodes arranged on a first substrate and several pairs of row (Y) electrodes arranged on a second substrate, the column and row electrodes being orthogonally oriented and in spaced, opposed relation to define therebetween a gap filled with an ionizable gas. In a first driving configuration, a corresponding electrode of each pair of (X) electrodes is selectively driven by an (X) address driver and similarly a corresponding one of each of the (Y) electrode pairs is selectively driven by a (Y) address driver. The other electrode of each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs then is connected in common to respective (X) and (Y) sustain voltage driver terminals. In a further embodiment, each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs is arranged in corresponding groups of electrode pairs, each group including a common number of such pairs. First electrodes of each pair of each group are connected to a common output terminal of an address and sustain voltage driver; thus, plural address and sustain voltage driver outputs corresponding to the plural groups are employed for each of the (X) and (Y) electrode pairs. The second electrodes of corresponding pairs of the plural groups are connected to respectively corresponding, further common output terminals of address and sustain voltage drivers; thus, a plurality of further common terminals corresponding to the number of electrode pairs in each group are provided, as to each of the (X) and (Y) electrodes. The panel as thus configured affords decoding of addressing signals applied to the common terminals by means of plasma coupling within the panel whereby the discharge point or cell defined by a desired electrode of each of the column and the row electrode pairs can be addressed selectively. A further embodiment provides shifting of the display to successive positions in either the (X) or (Y) directions.

Abstract: An enclosure containing an ionizable gas has electrodes mounted in opposition on opposite faces of the enclosure. A first set of electrodes on one side of the enclosure are energized in sequence. A second set of electrodes on the opposite side of the enclosure form a multiple-element character matrix in which groups of elements are electrically commoned so that the number of electrodes, and respective leads thereto, in the second set is less than the number of elements of the matrix. The electrodes of the first set are mounted and shaped so that each is opposite a plurality of electrodes of the first set, and so that the same electrode of the second set is opposite several electrodes of the first set. Thus different portions of the same electrodes of the first set, representing different elements of the matrix, can be separately actuated during the different time periods of energization of the electrodes of the first set. Thereby a time division multiplexed mode of operation of the character display is provided such that the number of leads to the display can be reduced significantly.
