A method for aligning multiple printing plates on a single piece of printing plate stock, whereby all plates register to one another and one or more printing press cylinders. The method includes the steps of (1) punching image and cylinder registration indices on the stock; (2) imaging a plurality of regions on the stock defining separate printing plates; (3) forming slitting indices relative to the defined plate regions; (4) forming a cylinder registration bend along at least one edge of the stock; and (5) slitting the stock into a plurality of printing plates. In one process, elongated image registration apertures, cylinder registration bends and notches and V-shaped slitting notches are successively provided to all plate regions to assure alignment of the printing plates to each other and the press cylinders.

In performing markings in semiconductor manufacturing devices, the positional discrepancy between printing plate and plate holder is first detected by a camera. After correcting such a discrepancy, the printing plate is positionally fixed and then printing is performed. The printing plate is rotated and moved horizontally in any directions when positional discrepancy is detected and corrected, and an image signal of such positional discrepancy supplied from the camera which is set to face the plate holder is processed to be shown on a monitor for executing correction of the discrepancy.

A mechanism for holding a master or printing plate on a cylinder of a duplicating or printing machine. An elongated housing, including an anvil, extends transversely across the periphery of the cylinder. A die plate extends along the housing above the anvil and defines a gap between the die plate and the anvil for receiving an edge of the master. The die plate has a series of holes spaced therealong. A pin bar extends along the housing below the anvil for moving pins into the holes in the die plate. An actuator mechanism, including pivot pins and link arms, is operatively associated between the housing and the die plate and between the housing and the pin bar for conjointly moving the die plate toward the anvil to close the gap and moving the pins through the master and into the holes in the die plate to hold the master. The pins have sharpened ends for piercing masters that are not provided with pre-punched perforations.

A printed circuit carrier which is deposited on a mobile table and has two spaced-apart holes is aligned with reference to the printing unit by two locating members one of which is fixed to the table and the other of which is movable relative to the table toward and away from the one locating member. The locating members are expandible and contractible and are introduced into the holes of a carrier on the table in contracted condition to be thereupon caused or permitted to expand and to thereby center the carrier on the table. If the distance x between the axes of the holes in the carrier on the table exceeds or is less than an optimum distance x', the table, the locating members and the carrier on the table are shifted in the longitudinal direction of a line connecting the axes of the holes in a direction counter to the direction of movement of the other locating member relative to the one locating member through half the difference between x and x'. The difference between the distances x and x' is monitored by a suitable gauge which transmits signals to a microprocessor serving to control a reversible motor which shifts the table and the carrier relative to the printing unit when the distance x deviates from the distance x'.

Methods of bonding a printing plate on a base film and an apparatus therefor are disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of support mechanisms, one of which is horizontally located and the other of which is disposed at a right angle with respect to the horizontal one. A strip of paper is reeved around the horizontal support mechanism, while a strip of film is reeved around the vertical one. A plotter is provided above and in conjunction with the horizontal support mechanism for marking the location on which to place a printing plate, on the paper reeved around the horizontal support mechanism. A half mirror is disposed in close proximity to both of said horizontal and vertical support mechanisms for projecting the location marked on the paper onto the film reeved around the vertical support mechanism. Using a lifter, the operator looks down the half mirror to view the location of a printing plate as projected onto the film, and bonds the printing plate to the base film in that projected location.

In printing with flexographic plates it is essential that each plate be accurately positioned on the plate cylinders. The mounting apparatus and method of this invention provide a register cylinder on which the flexographic plate is positioned by registration pins. The plate cylinder on which the flexographic plate is to be mounted is positioned in a predetermined rotational position on a mounting so that it can be moved towards and away from the register cylinder. The register cylinder is then rotated to a predetermined position and the plate cylinder brought into abutment with the flexographic plate and register cylinder. The registration pins are then retracted and both cylinders rotated to transfer the flexographic plate to the outer surface of the plate cylinder in registration. The plate adheres to the cylinder surface either by an adhesive substance, such as double sided tape, or magnetically.
