A rotary laser engraving device for retaining and rotating an object to be engraved is provided and includes a frame, a first support assembly and a second support assembly mounted on the frame. The first support assembly includes a first set of rollers for supporting a first end of the object to be engraved. The second support assembly includes a second set of rollers for supporting a second end of the object to be engraved. The first set of rollers and the second set of rollers are offset diagonally from the frame. At least one longitudinal adjustment mechanism and at least one vertical adjustment mechanism are carried by the frame and allow to adjust the longitudinal and vertical separation, respectively, between the first and second sets of rollers. A motor assembly is provided to rotate one of the first and second sets of rollers to rotate the object to be engraved.

The groove engraving device includes: a processing chamber for containing a piece to be processed, a cutter for groove engraving on the piece to be processed, a clamping mechanism for clamping the piece to be processed, a driving mechanism for driving the clamping mechanism to rotate, and a temperature controlling device for controlling a temperature inside the processing chamber to be within a preset temperature range. The clamping mechanism and the cutter are disposed inside the processing chamber, and the clamping mechanism is rotatable with respect to the processing chamber. The temperature controlling device is disposed inside the processing chamber. The groove engraving device can improve the processing efficiency and quality of the groove engraving on the piece to be processed.

An automatic self-centering chuck system for use on an engraver. The chuck system includes a plurality of jaws which are slidably mounted for movement in a radial direction toward a central aperture of the chuck to clamp a shaft for an engraving cylinder. Each of the jaws is actuated for movement by a lever pivotally mounted within the chuck. The levers are actuated for pivotal movement by an axially reciprocating drawbar which is energized for movement by a series of pneumatic cylinders. The components of the chuck are accurately machined to provide close tolerance, precise movements of the jaws whereby a cylinder will be accurately positioned at the central rotational axis of the chuck. In order to ensure that the precise level of jaw movement is maintained throughout the life the chuck, a lubricant flushing or purging system is provided for flushing normal wear particles from the precision components internal to the chuck.

A method and apparatus for automated loading and unloading of a cylinder in an engraver. The method and apparatus permit the engraver to accommodate cylinders of differing geometries, including a range of lengths, diameters and mounting configurations. The engraver includes a headstock and a tailstock which cooperate to rotatably support a cylinder at an engraving station in the engraver. The engraver also comprises a cylinder handling system having at least one cylinder support for supporting the cylinder between the headstock and tailstock during loading and unloading of the cylinder. In one form, the cylinder supports each comprise a telescoping support member having a support nest for engaging and supporting the cylinder at the engraving station. In another form, the cylinder supports each include a support housing and a support structure mounted to the support housing. In this form, the support structure includes at least one cylinder receiving area. Selection may be made between plural cylinder receiving areas for receiving cylinders of different dimensions.

This invention comprises a system for automatically inscribing a preselected design in a work piece utilizing a power-driven inscribing tool, preprogrammed control means incorporating a pattern of movement of the power-driven inscribing tool relative to the work piece along a multiplicity of independent axes including two preselected axes lying in a common plane conforming generally to incremental portions of the work surface of the work piece, positioning means responsive to the preprogrammed control means locating the power-driven inscribing tool in work-effecting relationship with respect to the work piece, and feedback means biased against the work surface of the work piece positioning the power-driven inscribing tool along the depth-establishing axis and the tilt axis of the pattern in conformity with preselected criteria for depth and tilt embodied in the pattern of movement incorporated in the preprogrammed control means.
