    摘要: An internal combustion engine having a cylindrical outer housing with inner cylindrical cylinders defining power cylinders circumferentially spaced in the engine. Each of the cylinder(s) has opposed intake and exhaust pistons. The intake and exhaust pistons use air bearings instead of conventional oil as a lubricant. The intake and exhaust pistons power a rotary cam mounted on opposed ends of the engine and a cam follower system positions the pistons. The rotary cam is operatively connected to a drive shaft or power take off shaft. A four bar linkage system is connected to the piston rod to minimize piston side loads. A jumper connects the ends of the power cylinders to pressurize air drawn into the engine and to admit heated air, indirectly heated during the combustion cycle, to charge the power cylinder for improved efficiency and to purge the pressure cylinder after combustion. The overall construction of the engine allows the engine to be made from relatively light weight materials providing a significantly improved power to weight ratio over conventional engines. The overall construction also allows for reduced fuel emissions and greater fuel efficiency.

    摘要: A two stroke diesel engine requiring a minimum of one pair of cylinders is constructable in multiple cylinder pairs. Each cylinder contains two oppositely working pistons. Four pistons drive, without rocking couples, opposite sides of a single crankshaft having three crankpins. Two paired cylinders are interconnected through and share a common precombustion chamber insuring cylinder pressure equalization and require only one fuel injector. The valveless engine has piston controlled intake and exhaust ports and crank phasing insures that exhaust ports are opened and closed prior to the respective opening and closing of the intake ports rendering the uniflow scavenged cylinders superchargeable. The precombustion chamber is optionally made variable in volume to simultaneously provide a variable compression ratio to both cylinders without affecting piston geometry or stroke.

    摘要: An internal combustion engine including: a cylinder, a combustion chamber in the cylinder, two opposed pistons within the cylinder and relatively movable towards and away from each other. The combustion chamber is defined between the two pistons. Each piston has an inner side defining a movable wall of the combustion chamber and also has an outer side. Two rotary output shafts extend generally transverse to the axial direction of movement of the pistons. The pistons are freely independently movable within the cylinder. An eccentric cam portion is provided on each output shaft so as to be rotatable therewith and each piston has a cam follower portion in the form of a rotary member on the outer side thereof. Each cam follower portion is arranged to bear against the associated eccentric cam portion of the respective output shaft so as to transmit outwardly directed gas forces arising within the combustion chamber and acting on the piston inner sides to the accentric cam portions so as to drive the output shafts.

    摘要: In a uniflow, double-opposed piston type two-cycle internal combustion engine of the type having first and second crank chambers attached to the ends of a cylinder, first and second pistons disposed in the first and second crank chambers, respectively, and slidably fitted into the cylinder so as to move toward and away from each other, an exhaust port formed through the cylinder wall and opened and closed by the first piston, and a plurality of scavenging ports formed through the cylinder wall and opened and closed by the second piston, an improvement comprising means for feeding the rich air-fuel mixture to some of the scavenging ports, means for feeding the lean air-fuel mixture or the air to the remaining scavenging ports, and the lean mixture or air scavenging ports being uncovered and opened earlier than the rich mixture scavenging ports, whereby the scavenging efficiency may be improved and the amount of air-fuel mixture escaping through the exhaust port together with the combustion products may be minimized. In addition, the first piston is advanced in phase by a predetermined degree over the second piston so that the compression ratio may be increased and consequently the engine output may be increased.

    摘要: An engine has pairs of opposing pistons that have common combustion spaces located centrally in a housing, around a single central drive shaft. The inner ends of the piston rods are connected to piston heads with ball and socket joints and the outer ends of the rods are similarly connected to swash plate assemblies on each opposite side of the drive shaft relative to the combustion spaces within an engine housing. The cylinder walls have outer ends positioned near the drive shaft and inner ends that are located further from that shaft and adjacent the combustion spaces. Thrust rings of the swash plate assemblies have teeth in mesh with stationary toothed rims within the housing to correctly position the thrust of the pistons. Air is compressed and forced into the combustion spaces with injected fuel from one end of the housing and expelled at the opposite end. An oil pump assembly is mounted at that opposite end of the housing on the drive shaft to supply oil under pressure through ducts in the drive shaft to the various moving parts. Coolant channels are positioned to encircle each side of the combustion spaces at the center of the engine housing. Air being pressured into the combustion spaces are given a whirling motion through slots in the cylinder linings by the configurations of the channels and piston heads.

    摘要: An engine driven reciprocating air compressor. The engine is operated in a through scavenge two-stroke mode. The engine has opposed pistons reciprocating in opposition in a cylinder, the pistons being rigidly connected to respective compressor pistons working in compressor cylinders. A crankshaft rotates about an axis perpendicular to and intersecting the engine cylinder axis. The piston pairs are directly coupled to the crankshaft by connecting rods. The crankshaft synchronizes the piston pairs, defines their strokes, and provides rotary motion for auxiliary devices. The connecting rods and crankshaft are lightweight and do not transmit full engine power. The piston pairs are provided with inward return energy from a flywheel on the crankshaft and air trapped in compressor cylinder clearance volumes. The inward faces of the compressor pistons may be used to compress fuel/air mixture to the scavenge pressure. Further vented cylinders and pistons may be used between the engine and compressor pistons to fully isolate the fuel/air mixture from the air being compressed.
