摘要: A water washable substantially biodegradable dye penetrant composition having excellent sensitivity and high stability, for use in non-destructive testing of objects to locate voids and defects therein, said composition consisting essentially of an organic dye, preferably a fluorescent dye, and a carrier or solvent for said dye, in the form of certain ethoxylated linear alcohols, particularly the biodegradable nonionic surfactants comprised of ethoxylates of a mixture of secondary alcohols having linear alkyl chains of from 11 to 15 carbon atoms. In the method of application of the dye penetrant compositions, such composition is applied to the surface of an object containing cracks and flaws, water is applied to the surface of the object to remove excess liquid dye penetrant composition from the surface without removing such penetrant from the cracks and defects, and with or without a developer, the surface of the object is viewed under suitable lighting conditions, e.g. ultraviolet or black light when the dye in the penetrant is a fluorescent dye, to locate any cracks or defects in the surface of the body as indicated by colored traces from the dye penetrant remaining in the cracks and flaws.

摘要: A method for detecting flaws in external surfaces of hollow workpieces employing sized particles carrying a liquid penetrant for transfer thereof to such external surfaces to coat the same with the liquid penetrant for use in the detection of flaws therein, while preventing, because of the size of the transfer particles, any substantial entry of the liquid penetrant into the hollow of such workpiece for collection therein and any subsequent leaking out of the collected penetrant onto the external surfaces to thereby interfere with the detection of flaws therein. The transfer of penetrant to the external surfaces of the workpieces only is facilitated by using an amount of the liquid penetrant insufficient to cause a free flow of penetrant between and around the transfer particles but a sufficient amount of penetrant is employed to coat the external surfaces of the workpieces adequately for the effective detection of any flaws therein. Suitable apparatus, preferably an open mesh tumbling drum, is provided for effecting such transfer of the liquid, flawdetecting penetrant to the external surfaces of the hollow workpieces by a combined rubbing, contacting and relative surface movement between said workpieces and said transfer particles. The liquid penetrant and transfer particles as a result of such relative surface movement provide a readily releasable coating of the particles for transfer therefrom of the liquid penetrant to the external surfaces to be tested.

摘要: Method for detecting cracks and flaws in the surface of an object or part, employing a dye penetrant composition which, following application of the dye penetrant composition to the part surface, includes means for facilitating removal of excess dye penetrant from such surface, in the form of a volatile degreaser-type solvent such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane. According to one embodiment, an object to be inspected is immersed in a dye penetrant which will withstand high temperatures, specifically a dye penetrant containing a wax, for example paraffin wax, a volatile solvent, preferably 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and a dye which is soluble in said volatile solvent, preferably a fluorescent dye, the dye penetrant composition being maintained at the boiling temperature of the volatile solvent, causing melting of the wax, which goes into solution, and vaporization of such solvent into a zone above the heated liquid dye penetrant composition, removing the object from the heated liquid dye penetrant composition, passing the object into the zone containing vapors of the volatile solvent and maintaining the object in the vapor zone for a period sufficient to cause vapors of the volatile solvent contacting and condensing on the surface of the object, to wash excess liquid dye penetrant from the surface of the object back into the liquid dye penetrant composition, together with condensed vapors of volatile solvent, removing and drying the object. The process is conveniently carried out in a degreaser-type apparatus, in which the object is initially passed through the vapors of volatile solvent above the bubbling liquid dye penetrant composition in the bottom of the degreaser, permitting facile removal of any oil or grease from the surface of the object, after which the object is then treated in the liquid dye penetrant composition, then again passed upwardly through the vapors of volatile degreaser solvent to remove excess liquid dye penetrant and dried, as previously noted, following which the dried surface of the object containing dye penetrant including wax in the cracks and defects thereof, with or without application of a developer, can be inspected under appropriate lighting conditions for detection of cracks and flaws.

摘要: Compositions and processes for providing a selective increase in wash-removability of surface penetrant and entrapments of penetrant in shallow surface discontinuities, as compared with penetrant entrapments in deeper cracks. Water-washable gelforming inspection penetrants are constructed using a balanced combination of hydrophylic surfactant and relatively volatile lipophylic synergist constituents. Thin layers of penetrant coated on test surfaces and allowed to drain and dry for a suitable period of time will tend to selectively lose part or most of the synergist constituent in surface layers, while considerably less loss will occur in penetrant contained in deep cracks. The selective loss of synergist from surface layers or shallow entrapments, will permit such penetrant layers to lose much of their gel-forming capability, and thus become more readily removable in a water wash, thereby providing an improved contrast of crack indications against an unwanted background of fine surface indications.

摘要: A method using a mixture containing both fluorescent and visible dyed magnetic particles for detecting inhomogeneities in metal workpieces. The formation of adherent accumulations of the magnetic particles at localized areas where a magnetic leakage field occurs provides indications of the existence of surface or subsurface discontinuities or the like in magnetizable workpieces. The fluorescent indications are initially detected under ultraviolet, or black light, and are rendered visible under white light by the application thereto of a solvent for the visible dye to cause bleeding thereof. Preferably, the solvent contains a light-colored pigment suspended therein to afford a contrasting background for the visible color indication, and also contains a thickening agent, resin or the like to increase the viscosity of the solvent and thereby limit the extent of bleeding of the visible dye. Compositions comprising mixtures of the respective fluorescent and visible dyed particles are applied to the surface undergoing test either in dry powdered form or in the form of suspensions of such particles in a common liquid vehicle that is a nonsolvent for the particles and also for the visible dye associated with the visible dyed particles. The visible color indications formed by the subsequent application of a solvent for the visible dye, and consequent bleeding of the visible dye enable operators to carry out under ordinary, or white light, whatever scarfing or other treatment is required to remove the surface discontinuity from the workpiece or to compensate for it.

摘要: A liquid remover composition for the removal of a film of excess liquid penetrant from the surface of a workpiece undergoing inspection for surface discontinuities. The remover composition is a two-phase liquid in which the continuous phase is water and dispersed phase is a liquid immiscible with water but miscible with the liquid penetrant, and is present in an amount from about 0.2 percent to 10 percent by weight, or higher, of the remover composition. The dispersed phase is in very finely divided form suspended in the water when applied with vigorous turbulence against the film of excess penetrant to be removed. Preferably, the dispersed phase liquid is of a substantially different density from water so that separation can be easily effected, after removal of the penetrant from the surface, between the water and the admixed penetrant and dispersed phase liquid so as to facilitate separate use or disposal thereof without pollution problems.
