The cassette may also be provided with a removable front wall so that replacement ribbons can be inserted by a user, and a disposable container can be put into the ribbon take up chamber of the cassette so that a user does not have to handle the rumpled ink ribbon when changing to a new ribbon.

An ink ribbon cartridge includes a detachable ink ribbon spool which may be rotatably mounted in a lower shell of the cartridge via first and second shank portions axially projected from opposite sides of the spool. The first shank is of a rod shaped configuration, and includes at least large and small circumference sections which are longitudinally spaced apart. According to such configuration, the spool may be installed only in a compatible ink ribbon cartridge having a lower shell including a first bearing member formed with a first bearing groove rotatably supporting the large circumference section of the first shank and having a width proportional thereto. A second bearing member is disposed adjacent to, and spaced apart from, the first bearing member. The second bearing member includes a second bearing groove having a width proportional to the small circumference section of the first shank. A third bearing member is formed at a location in said lower shell opposing the first bearing member such that the second shank of the spool is rotatably supported thereby. According to this, various configurations of spools and compatible lower shells may be realized which may be utilized for distinguishing between various types of ink ribbon, etc. Since a spool may only be mounted in a lower shell of compatible configuration, misassembly during manufacturing is prevented. In addition, user error, such as accidental installation of an inappropriate ink ribbon, may be surely prevented.

This specific information may be updated to identify a user or detect a residual amount of the tape.

A reusable ribbon cassette can be provided for a printer for printing on labels by using an ink transferred from the ribbon to the label material, wherein the ribbon cassette provides the ribbon for the printing. Such a re-usable cassette for a ribbon which is used up rapidly, in particular an ink ribbon in a thermal transfer printing process, has two parallel housing halves, one of which has vertically projecting pins onto which the other housing half can be pushed, and then maintained in position by friction. When the cassette is open, the tape, which is conventionally wound on a tape core, can be pushed onto the cores or core pairs of the cassette, and thereby become simultaneously non-rotationally connected to the cores. The connecting pins for the two housing halves advantageously simultaneously form deflector elements for the tape. The deflector pins are also detachable, so that the pins can be replaced by shorter or longer ones, thereby making it possible to use a narrower or wider tape for the cassette. The cores, or at least one core per core pair, can be coupled to the corresponding shaft by means of internal and external teeth, whereby one of the shafts is a drive shaft.
