Abstract:
An ultra centrifuge cascade has centrifuge cascade groups mounted between horizontal upper and lower plates and enclosed by a common containment vessel for all of the centrifuges, the latter being positioned vertically and parallel to each other between the plates, all piping being also enclosed by the common or single containment vessel.
Abstract:
An electric induction furnace has an inductor coil formed from a tubular conductor through which cooling water may be flowed, and which is made with an inner layer of corrosion-resisting copper or copper alloy and an outer layer of aluminum or aluminum alloy and which, although oxidizable in air, forms an electrically nonconductive oxide layer eliminating the risk of short-circuiting between the coil convolutions. Material costs are reduced by making the aluminum layer considerably thicker than the copper layer. The two layers are integrated under high mechanical pressure during the manufacture of the conductor, the electrical resistance between the interfaces of the two layers being negligible.
Abstract:
An improved method of measuring physical quantities such as pressure, tensile force and so on in a material, such as the striplike material in a rolling mill, using a plurality of measuring devices side-by-side, each covering a zone, which devices provide an electrical output proportional to the pressure (strip stress) thereon, and in doing so assume that the whole of the sensor (zone) is covered by the strip being sensed, in which means are provided to correct the outputs of those sensors on the end which are not completely covered by the strip. Means are provided for determining the percentage of coverage of the sensors on the ends, and for multiplying the output of those sensors by a correction factor in order to obtain a corrected output which accurately reflects the physical quantity being measured.
Abstract:
A die for manufacturing rods of rectangular cross-section from a core of aluminium or an aluminium alloy and a casing of copper or a copper alloy by hydrostatic extrusion of a compound billet of such materials has a cup-shaped bottom which may be spherical, ellipsoidal, hyperbolic or parabolic in cross-section and a conical upper part. The bottom parts of the generatrices in axial section through the die form an angle which is between 120* and 180*, preferably between 150* and 170*, and a conical upper part has a cone angle between 40* and 120*.
Abstract:
A power transmission for high voltage direct current includes a direct current line and converter stations connected to the direct current line, with alternating current networks each connected to one of the converter stations. Each converter station includes at least two converters connected in parallel and is provided with a current control system to set the total current of the station as well as the current in the individual converters in accordance with a current order. Each station is provided with an arrangement for sensing the current and/or voltage on the d.c. line, which is connected to the current control system of the station and which reduces the current order set in the station in response to sudden interference in current and/or voltage. The station operating as an inverter is provided with an arrangement responsive to the disappearance of the current in one of the inverters of the station to limit the internal direct voltage of the other inverter to approximately zero.
Abstract:
In a high pressure pressure press which has a seal holder, a high pressure seal is provided between the wall of a high pressure cylinder and a die or an axially movable plunger projecting into the cylinder, which is composed of two sealing rings, one of which has an outer surface abutting the cylindrical wall and an end surface abutting the seal holder, while the other ring has a cylindrical surface abutting the plunger and a surface abutting the seal holder. The portion of the outer surface of the first ring abutting the cylindrical wall which is nearest to the seal holder is provided with generally longitudinally extending draining channels therein. The sealing ring which makes contact with the inner cylindrical wall of the chamber is prestressed and has a normal outer diameter which is more than 0.1 per cent greater than that of the high pressure cylinder, thus making contact with the cylindrical wall with a force dependent on the prestressing.
Abstract:
In convertor equipment which includes a plurality of convertor bridges connected in parallel on the AC side, the AC terminals of all the convertors are connected to the same AC source. Each convertor bridge is an unsymmetrical semi-controlled bridge, composed of two controllable and two non-controllable rectifiers. The bridges have their DC terminals connected to a common load, such as an armature of a DC motor. The AC terminals of the bridges are connected to the secondary winding of a transformer, the primary winding of which is connected to a feeding AC network. Fuses for protecting the rectifiers against overcurrents are provided in the AC leads which are connected to the connecting points between the two branches of each bridge which contains non-controllable rectifiers.
Abstract:
Apparatus for melting, holding and tapping metals or metal alloys, in which solid material is melted down in a channel-type induction furnace, the melt then being transferred to a second channel-type induction furnace to be kept hot, possibly overheated and stored, characterized in that the melting furnace is connected to the second furnace by way of a feeding channel and is located at a higher level than the second furnace and that the second furnace is in the form of a presssure furnace for pressure tapping through a spout.
Abstract:
A press for hydrostatic extrusion of tubes includes a high pressure cylinder axially displaceable in a press stand with a die insertable into the cylinder and a pressure generating punch insertable into the cylinder to generate the pressure for extrusion. A mandrel is carried by a rod which passes through the pressure generating punch. Seals are provided between the mandrel and the pressure generating punch and between the pressure generating punch and the pressure cylinder. These seals are so located that during the actual extrusion they are arranged in the same transverse plane.
Abstract:
An arrangement for achieving a short recovery time in a time lag relay, composed of static components in which the delay is determined by the charging time of a capacitor, includes two programmable unijunction transistors with the anode-cathode path in parallel with the capacitor and the control electrodes connected each to one voltage divider between the poles of the feeding voltage source. The voltage dividers are so designed and the control electrodes so connected to their voltage dividers that, during the charging of the capacitor, the voltage on the control electrode of the first transistor is higher than the voltage on the control electrode of the second transistor. If the charging process is interrupted before the relay has operated, the voltage on the control electrode of the first transistor falls more quickly than the voltage on the control electrode of the second transistor.
