Abstract:
A recording of a televised content stream that has been recorded by a digital recorder is periodically refreshed with updated commercials by pushing the updates down to the viewer's device or pulling the updates from the source, so that when the viewer plays back the recording, he may view, if desired, commercials that are more timely than those that were originally recorded.
Abstract:
A PVR is selectively granted access to a hard disk drive. The HDD generates a random number, encrypts it with a key known to the PVR, and sends it to the PVR, which decrypts the number and increments it by one to render a new number. The new number is encrypted with the key and sent back to the HDD, which decrypts the new number, decrements it by one, and compares the result to the original number, granting the PVR access only when a match occurs.
Abstract:
A radio frequency receiver includes an amplifier and a detector that produces a bias control signal indicating the level of the signal environment in which the receiver is currently operating. A bias generator sets the bias level of the amplifier according to the bias control signal, where the bias level tends to increase as the signal level increases. Further, the receiver, includes a first circuit adapted to receive a radio frequency input signal, the circuit having an adjustable bias level, a bias control having more than one level of control for generating a bias control signal based upon a base-band signal for controlling the first circuit and generating an output signal; and an alternative bypass switch across the first circuit so as to send a DC signal corresponding to the total power generated by said feedback means.
Abstract:
A method of generating a value for a missing pixel nullxnull by determining a nullleast harmfulnull local edge direction between pixels, or sub-pixels, on substantially opposing sides of the missing pixel, and interpolating the difference to arrive at a value for pixel nullxnull. The method involves generating sub-pixel values for locations within neighboring pixels, the sub-pixels may comprise half-pixels, quarter-pixels, three-quarter pixels, and so forth, wherein any fractional pixel quantity may be created. Absolute difference values are calculated between neighboring pixels, or sub-pixel values, to determine a least harmful local edge direction along which a value is generated for pixel nullxnull by interpolation.
Abstract:
A system and method for providing on demand information at a display device includes a microprocessor that is connected to a radio data service signal receiver and a display device. The radio signal contains the data source for the on-demand content rather than the display device tuner. The microprocessor causes information from the radio data service signal to be decoded and displayed at the display device when requested by a user.
Abstract:
A system and method for flexibly implementing a wireless gaming network of compatible portable units may include individual game applications that allow each respective portable unit to function in either a server mode as a server unit that manages a particular gaming event, or in a client mode as a client unit that participates in the gaming event. The compatible portable units may include one or more client units configured to utilize corresponding game applications in the client mode to participate in the gaming event. The compatible portable units may also include a selectable server unit configured to utilize a game application in the server mode for managing the gaming event. The server unit may also include a security module that separately controls access by the various client units for participating in the gaming event.
Abstract:
A portable computer in a store can be carried past a kiosk and wirelessly receive from the kiosk demonstration versions of software, along with an ID of the store. Later, after using the demonstration version, the user can access a Web server and purchase a full version of the software. During the transaction, the store ID is provided to the server, which can then credit the particular store at which the demonstration version was obtained with a sale.
Abstract:
An electron emitting structure that produces a substantially uniform electric field resulting in a substantially straight electron emission. In a preferred form, the electron emitting structure is used as a cathode plate of a field emission display (FED). In one embodiment, an electron emitting structure comprises a substrate, a first electrode formed on the substrate, a second electrode crossing over an active region of the first electrode, and an insulating material separating and electrically insulating the first and second electrodes. A plurality of openings are formed in at least a portion of the second electrode crossing over the active region. And, an electron emitting material is deposited on at least a portion of the active region of the first electrode, portions of the electron emitting material not underneath respective ones of the plurality of openings of the second electrode.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for supporting and enabling the selection and mixing of multiple input data streams from multiple sources within a receiving device allowing external control includes a receiving device, a control device and one or more source devices. The receiving device receives input data streams from the source devices. The input data streams are provided as inputs to selectors within the receiving device. The selectors output selective ones of the input data streams to a mixer, based on control information received from a control device. The mixer then combines the selected input data streams into an output stream, based on control information received from the control device. The interfaces and functions of the selectors and the mixer are provided to the control device in response to a request from the control device. As the control device receives control inputs, the control device provides control information to the selectors and the mixer within the receiving device to control the output of the input data streams.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for configuring and controlling home entertainment systems through natural language and spoken commands using a natural language server allows a user to enter a natural language request within a network of devices. When a user's request is entered it is then transmitted to a network interface unit which digitizes and stores the request. The digitized request and information about the user's network of devices is then transmitted from the network interface unit to a natural language server, preferably over the internet. The natural language server then processes the request and generates commands necessary to complete the request within the user's network of devices. These commands are then transmitted from the natural language server to the network interface unit. The network interface unit then transmits the commands to the appropriate devices within the network of devices. The devices within the network of devices then execute the received commands to complete the user's request.
