Techniques for mitigating interference in a wireless communication system are described. In one design, a sector may determine multiple fast other sector interference (OSI) indications for multiple subzones, with each subzone corresponding to a different portion of the system bandwidth. At least one report may be generated for the multiple OSI indications, with each report including at least one OSI indication for at least one subzone. Each report may be encoded to obtain code bits, which may then be mapped to a sequence of modulation symbols. A sequence of modulation symbols of zero values may be generated for each report with all OSI indications in the report set to zero to indicate lack of high interference in the corresponding subzones. This allows a report to be transmitted with zero power in a likely scenario. A regular OSI indication may also be determined for the system bandwidth and transmitted.

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate communicating reverse link control information over OFDMA control channel(s) and CDMA control channel(s). Dedicated OFDMA control channel resources can be assigned to mobile device(s). Control information related to one or more logical control channels can be generated by a mobile device. Further, a physical control channel type (e.g., OFDMA control channel or a CDMA control channel) can be selected for sending the control information via the reverse link. For example, control information associated with periodic, logical control channels can be multiplexed and sent over the OFDMA control channel (e.g., utilizing the dedicated OFDMA control channel resources) while control information related to non-periodic, logical control channels can be transmitted over the CDMA control channel.

Transmission schemes that can flexibly achieve the desired spatial multiplexing order, spatial diversity order, and channel estimation overhead order are described. For data transmission, the assigned subcarriers and spatial multiplexing order (M) for a receiver are determined, where M≧1. For each assigned subcarrier, M virtual antennas are selected from among V virtual antennas formed with V columns of an orthonormal matrix, where V≧M. V may be selected to achieve the desired spatial diversity order and channel estimation overhead order. Output symbols are mapped to the M virtual antennas selected for each assigned subcarrier by applying the orthonormal matrix. Pilot symbols are also mapped to the V virtual antennas. The mapped symbols are provided for transmission from T transmit antennas, where T≧V. Transmission symbols are generated for the mapped symbols, e.g, based on OFDM or SC-FDMA. Different cyclic delays may be applied for the T transmit antennas to improve diversity.

Systems and methods that facilitate management of interference and communication resources are provided. A differential approach is devised in which other-sector interference (OSI) and communication resources are managed by adjusting an offset (delta) value associated with the resources in response to receiving an indication of other-sector interference. An OSI indication can be issued based on a short and a long time scale, and effective interference metrics over time-frequency resources. The adjusted delta value is communicated to a serving access point, which reassigns communication resources in order to mitigate other-sector interference.

It is determined if a multi-carrier mode of a protocol is MultiCarrierOn. The QuickChannelInfo block is transmitted on each carrier of the protocol. The QuickChannelInfo block is transmitted to the access terminal over a communication link. The QuickChannelInfo block is processed after the QuickChannelInfo block is received at the access terminal over the communication link.

Beacon symbols are sent periodically from the base stations in an OFDM system. The entire power of the base station, or a large portion of it is concentrated in these symbols, thus they are very easily recognized by the mobile stations. The frequencies upon which these symbols are transmitted and the time at which they are transmitted communicates information such as the base station/sector identity and the preferred carrier of the given base station/sector to the mobile station. In order to avoid collision between the beacon symbols of different base stations and sectors, the beacon symbols from different base stations/sectors are transmitted at different symbols times and on different subcarriers.

A channel estimation system comprises a filtering component that selectively scales a plurality of carriers as a function of location of the plurality of carriers within a frequency band, wherein the plurality of carriers comprises at least one data carrier and at least one pilot carrier. A component thereafter extrapolates an observation from the at least one pilot carrier, wherein a channel is estimated as a function of the extrapolated observation. The scaling of the carriers facilitates reducing a flooring effect associated with channel estimation. The filtering component can be employed at a transmitter and/or at a receiver, and can be activated and/or deactivated as a function of a sensed data packet type.
