To transmit a multi-carrier signal, a transmitter provides zero symbols for guard subbands, performs OFDM modulation, and filters the resultant time-domain samples with a pulse shaping filter. To transmit a single-carrier signal, the transmitter partitions the single-carrier signal into segments. Each segment contains up to K samples and is padded, if needed, to the length of an OFDM symbol. Each padded segment is transformed from the time domain to the frequency domain to generate a corresponding frequency-domain segment with K symbols. For each frequency-domain segment, the symbols corresponding to the guard subbands are set to zero. Each frequency-domain segment is then transformed from the frequency domain to the time domain to generate a corresponding time-domain segment. A cyclic prefix may or may not be appended to each time-domain segment. Each time-domain segment is filtered with the same pulse shaping filter to generate an output waveform for the single-carrier signal.

Dynamic resource allocation systems, apparatus, and methods are disclosed for selectively improving the ability of a receiver to determine a channel estimate in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system. A wireless communication system can use a common pilot channel configuration to aid channel estimation in one or more receivers in communication with the system. A receiver in communication with the system may be unable to demodulate received data due to an inaccurate channel estimate. The receiver can communicate to a transmitter in the system a request for additional channel estimation resources. The wireless communication system can provide additional channel estimation resources by inserting dedicated pilot channels into one or more of the frequencies allocated to symbols for the receiver. If the receiver is still unable to demodulate received data, the wireless communication system can incrementally insert additional pilot channels in the symbol associated with the receiver.

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate increasing system capacity in a code-limited WCDMA (e.g., TDD, FDD, . . . ) wireless communication environment. According to one aspect, a larger code space can be defined by introducing multiple code clusters within a sector, wherein each cluster has a unique scrambling code. Codes within a cluster can have orthogonal Walsh sequences that can be assigned to user devices to facilitate communicating over a wireless network and can overlap with codes in another cluster. The unique scrambling code assigned to each cluster can ensure that duplicate Walsh sequences in another cluster in the same sector appear as a pseudo-noise codes.

Estimation of channel characteristics and interference level in a time-varying multi-carrier multi-user systems is carried out concurrently. To perform the estimation, a multitude of data symbols and dedicated pilot symbols are transmitted over the channel. Next, an initial estimate value is selected for the interference level. The initial estimate value for the interference level is used together with the received pilot symbols to provide a first estimate of the channel. The first estimate of the channel is used to determine a new updated value for the interference level, which in turn, is used to update the value of the first estimate of the channel iteratively. The iterations continue until the iteratively updated values of the interference level and channel satisfy predefined limits. The data symbols and the final updated value of the channel are subsequently used to provide a second estimate for the channel.

Providing for interference reduction and/or avoidance utilizing backhaul signaling between wireless access points (APs) of a wireless access network (AN) is described herein. By way of example, an interference avoidance request (IAR) can be issued by an AP to reduce signal interference on forward link (FL) and/or downlink (DL) transmissions by neighboring APs. The IAR can be routed via a backhaul network and/or over-the-air via access terminals (ATs) coupled with the AP or one or more interfering APs. Upon receiving the IAR, an interfering AP can determine reduced transmit power levels for FL and/or RL transmissions and respond to the IAR. The response can include reduced power levels and can be sent via the backhaul network or OTA. By employing the backhaul network in full or in part, interference avoidance can be conducted even for semi-planned or unplanned heterogeneous networks coupled by the backhaul.

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate transmitting control information in wireless networks. Portions of bandwidth can be blanked for transmitting control information, and the control information transmitters can utilize beacon symbols to convey the control information. In this regard, interference is mitigated with respect to data transmissions over the control information bandwidth. Selected frequencies of the beacon symbols in a codeword can be used to indicate the control information. The codewords can be encoded with an error control code to provide redundancy for decoding in the presence of some interference.
