Based on the received text sequence, a processing device generates the video sequence of a person to simulate visual and audible emotional expressions of the person, including using an audio model of the person's voice to generate an audio portion of the video sequence. The emotional expressions in the visual portion of the video sequence are simulated based a priori knowledge about the person. For instance, the a priori knowledge can include photos or videos of the person captured in real life.

A modem employing feedback control coding to dynamically control signal-to-noise ratios and to identify errored codewords for retransmission. The receive path components of the modem include a signal-to-noise estimator, a feedback controller and a dynamic demapper. The signal-to-noise estimator repeatedly determines a difference between a target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and actual SNR in communications received from an opposing modem. A feedback controller responds to each determination by the signal-to-noise controller to send to the opposing modem a set of modified transmit control parameters for reducing the difference between the target and actual SNRs. The dynamic demapper dynamically alters constellation size or power spectral density for demapping communications received from the opposing modem responsive to a change in transmission parameters thereof resulting from the modified set of transmit control parameters.

The at least one in-channel forward error correction component discretely encodes and decodes data from each communication channels transmitted and received over the plurality of transmission lines. A method and apparatus for communicating multi-tone modulated upstream and downstream channels of communication data between a pair of communication devices utilizing a common set of tones for the upstream and downstream channels. The pair of communication devices each include a digital stage configured to assign mutually orthogonal code sequences for encoding and decoding the upstream and downstream channel respectively. The transmit path of the digital stage of each communication device is configured to generate redundancy in the associated communication data in either the time or frequency domain and to encode the redundant communication data with the mutually orthogonal code sequence prior to transmission thereby allowing the communication devices to share a common frequency spectrum of a communication medium for the upstream and downstream communication channels.

An apparatus and method for A/D conversion is provided. The apparatus provides for multi-channel A/D conversion. It may be used in any application in which A/D conversion of either a single signal or multiple signal sources is required. Such applications include X-DSL communications. The apparatus and method allows A/D converters to be fabricated with reduced cost and power when compared with prior art designs. The A/D converter comprises a sampler, a converter and a logic. The sampler includes an input coupled with at least one analog information signal. The sampler repetitively provides at least one pre-sample together with a sample of the analog information signal. The sampling interval between the samples is substantially greater than a pre-sample interval between the pre-sample and the corresponding sample. The converter includes a bit line output and at least one input coupled with the output of said sampler. The converter is responsive to the pre-sample at the input to output a first bit signal corresponding to at least one significant bit of the pre-sample at the bit line output. The converter is further responsive to the sample at the input, to output a second bit signal corresponding to at least one significant bit of the sample at the bit line output. The logic is coupled with the bit line output of said converter. The logic combines the first bit signal and the second bit signal into a composite digital sample of the pre-sample together with the sample.
