Abstract: An intake air circuit is structured to transmit intake air from a turbocharger compressor to an intake manifold of an engine. A charge air cooler (“CAC”), a bypass line, and a bypass heater are each positioned along the intake air circuit in parallel with each other. A first control valve is structured to controllably divert the intake air around the CAC. A second control valve is structured to controllably divert the intake air around at least one of the bypass line and the bypass heater. A controller operatively coupled to each of the engine, and the first and second control valves is structured to control each of the first and second control valves to cause the intake air to flow along a determined desired flow path based on each of measured ambient temperature and measured engine load.

Abstract: A system and method of inducing an operational response change in an operating direct-injection internal combustion engine is provided such that the engine includes a cylinder into which liquid fuel injection is directly performed. The method starts by operating the direct-injection engine using a start of injection (SOI) protocol. At some point during operation, it is determined that a change is desired for a first parameter of engine operation that is at least partially a function of a charge provided to the cylinder (such as the torque output). In response an operational response in the engine is induced by altering the SOI protocol via a first SOI alteration that alters the volumetric efficiency of the cylinder and changes the first parameter.

Abstract: A system is provided for controlling operation of an engine brake system of an engine in a vehicle. The system includes a controller having an over-speed condition detection unit and an operation mode transition unit. The over-speed condition detection unit is configured to detect an over-speed condition based on a current engine speed and a fuel cut limit speed, the fuel cut limit speed being a predetermined engine speed at which fuel supplied to the engine is suspended. The operation mode transition unit is configured to control the operation of the engine brake system by transitioning the controller between a plurality of brake operation modes based on at least one transition parameter.

Abstract: Systems, apparatus, and methods are disclosed that include a divided exhaust engine with at least one pair of primary EGR cylinders and a plurality of pairs of non-primary EGR cylinders. The pair of primary EGR cylinders can be connected to an intake with an EGR system that lacks an EGR cooler. In another embodiment, the cylinder pairs include exhaust flow paths that join in the cylinder head to form a common exhaust outlet for each cylinder pair in the cylinder head that is connected directly to the EGR system or to the exhaust system without an exhaust manifold.

Abstract: A system includes an engine with a plurality of pistons housed in respective ones of a plurality of cylinders, an air intake system provides air to the plurality of cylinders through respective ones of a plurality of intake valves, an exhaust system to release exhaust gas from the plurality of cylinders through one of a plurality of exhaust valves, and a controller coupled to a sensor to control a switching tappet for compression release braking. Alternatively to a tappet, the system includes a roller finger follower controlling an opening and closing timing of exhaust valves, the roller finger follower has an inner roller follower arm adjacent an outer sliding follower, and a controller that in response to an engine braking request locks the inner roller follower arm with the outer sliding follower to contact a second cam lobe and open the exhaust valve during a compression stroke of the cylinder.
