Abstract: A system, method, and engine control module for energy ignition management of a combustion engine. The method may be performed by the system or the engine control module. The method includes determining operating conditions of the combustion engine, setting ignition energy characteristics for a dedicated EGR cylinder and a non-dedicated EGR cylinder based on the operating conditions. The ignition energy characteristics include at least one of magnitude of energy, current, voltage, and ignition energy duration. At least one characteristic of the ignition energy characteristics for the non-dedicated EGR cylinder is different than a corresponding characteristic for the dedicated EGR cylinder. The method also includes energizing ignition aid plugs based on the ignition energy characteristics.

Abstract: A system and method of inducing an operational response change in an operating direct-injection internal combustion engine is provided such that the engine includes a cylinder into which liquid fuel injection is directly performed. The method starts by operating the direct-injection engine using a start of injection (SOI) protocol. At some point during operation, it is determined that a change is desired for a first parameter of engine operation that is at least partially a function of a charge provided to the cylinder (such as the torque output). In response an operational response in the engine is induced by altering the SOI protocol via a first SOI alteration that alters the volumetric efficiency of the cylinder and changes the first parameter.

Abstract: A system and method of detecting fueling imbalance(s) in an internal combustion engine is provided. The method includes receiving data regarding an oxygen content of engine exhaust for the engine operating at a cycle rate. Frequency component analysis is performed comprising a filtering operation on the received oxygen content data. The filtering is done at the cycle rate of the engine or harmonics thereof to obtain filtered oxygen content data. Then, the method/system determines at least one of: 1) one or more angles of the engine at which the filtered oxygen content data exhibits a first amplitude value characteristic relative to amplitude values at other angles; and 2) a shape of the filtered oxygen content data obtained by sampling at pre-defined engine angles. The method/system then identifies a cylinder experiencing a fueling imbalance responsive to the determined at least one of one or more angle(s) and shape of the data.

Abstract: The present invention provides for predicting peak cylinder temperatures above which knock in an engine may become more frequent and then provides one or more actuation approaches to reduce the knock of the engine while maintaining engine performance. The actuation approaches of the present invention include one or more of direct injection, engine gas recirculation, and spark retarding, where the application of one or more the actuation approaches is determined based upon using operational and engine characteristic inputs as well as modeling and estimation values as inputs in a feedforward control methodology.
