Abstract: An optical device includes a light guide (LG) attached to a support component. The LG receives a display light from a light engine, and directs a first portion of the display light out of the LG to form an outcoupled light. The LG also causes a second portion of the display light to become incident upon an outer perimeter of the LG at one or more LG regions of the LG to form one or more stray lights, respectively. The LG may be mechanically coupled to the support component at one or more coupling regions positioned outside of the one or more LG regions. A wearable heads-up display (WHUD) can incorporate the optical device.

Abstract: Systems and methods for adjusting a level of force exerted by the temple arm portions of a frame of a head mounted wearable device are provided. Hinge mechanisms that provide for the rotatable coupling of a temple arm portion to a rim portion of a frame of the head mounted wearable device, or glasses, may include a rotation mechanism that facilitates rotation of the temple arm portion relative to the rim portion, and a biasing mechanism that can be adjusted to apply a desired level of lateral force to a head of a user wearing the glasses. The hinge mechanisms may allow for adjustments to biasing rates and/or pre-load levels and/or amounts of temple arm portion rotation prior to engagement to adjust the applied force to desired levels and maintain user comfort.

Abstract: Display systems, such as near eye display systems or wearable heads up displays, may include a laser projection system having an optical engine and an optical scanner. Light output by the optical engine may be directed into the optical scanner as two angularly separated laser light beams. The angularly separated laser light beams typically have different angles of incidence on a second scan mirror of the optical scanner. Respectively different levels of magnification are applied to the beam diameter of each of the angularly separated laser light beams in a first dimension, such that the angularly separated laser light beams have respectively different beam diameters upon incidence at the second scan mirror. In some embodiments, the different beam diameters of the angularly separated laser light beams result in regions of incidence of each of the angularly separated laser light beams on the second scan mirror being equal or substantially similar.

Abstract: A head-mounted display (HMD) system includes a lens element supported by a support structure. The lens element includes a waveguide that includes an incoupler, an outcoupler, and an exit pupil expander. The incoupler is disposed within a first area of the waveguide. The outcoupler is disposed within a second area of the waveguide. The exit pupil expander is disposed within a third area of the waveguide. An anti-reflection coating is formed via fabrication used to form the incoupler, the outcoupler, and the exit pupil expander. The anti-reflection coating is disposed within a fourth area of the waveguide different than the first, second, and third areas of the waveguide.

Abstract: There is provided an optical element including a light guide, an incoupler, and a beam splitter disposed in an optical path of a display beam between the incoupler and a light engine to generate the display beam. The display beam may comprise first and second beams. The beam splitter may split the display beam to form a first offspring beam including the first beam and a first portion of the second beam, and to form a second offspring beam including a second portion of the second beam. The first and second offspring beams may be incident upon the incoupler at first and second incidence positions respectively. The first incidence position may be different than the second incidence position. The incoupler may direct at least a portion of each of the first and second offspring beams into the light guide to form incoupled first and second offspring beams respectively.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for accommodating multiple sets of laser light sources in an optical engine of a display system such as a laser projection system are described. Laser light beams may be combined via wavelength-, polarization-, and/or angular-separation-based techniques. First and second sets of laser light beams may be angularly separated such that different sets of partially overlapping pixels are projected by the system, thereby increasing the display pixel density and/or an expanding the field of view of the display. One or more laser die may be mounted to each submount of the optical engine. For embodiments with two laser dies on each submount, collimating lenses may introduce angular separation between laser light beams output by each pair of commonly mounted laser dies. A retroreflector prism may be disposed at a beam combiner to provide a compact extension of the optical path through the beam combiner.

Abstract: Systems and methods for incoupling light into a waveguide. A system includes a transfer optic and an optical scanner being configured to receive light from an optical engine. The optical scanner includes a first scan mirror positioned close to the transfer optic. The system further includes a waveguide with an incoupler positioned close to the transfer optic, which is configured to direct the light from the optical engine to the first scan mirror and to transmit light reflected from the first scan mirror to one of a second scan mirror or the incoupler of the waveguide.

Abstract: Lightguide integrity monitoring in a head mounted display is facilitated by monitoring an elongated conductor disposed proximal a lightguide in an optical combiner. When a sufficient change in one or more electrical characteristics of the elongated conductor is detected, a signal indicating that the lightguide has been damaged may be generated, which may alert the user to the damage or disable one or more light sources in the HMD to prevent eye discomfort. The monitored electrical characteristics of the elongated conductor may include connectivity, impedance, and gain, among others. A sufficient change in the one or more electrical characteristics may be detected based on a percentage change in an electrical characteristic, a change in more than one electrical characteristic, or a change in a ratio of two electrical characteristics, among others.

Abstract: A rotational lens assembly reduces the size of a gap between a lens and a frame of an optical light engine projector assembly. The lens includes a thread structure arranged around the outside edge of the lens. The thread structure allows the lens to align and lock within the optical assembly via at least a partial rotation of the lens. In addition, the rotation of the lens during assembly results in a relatively small gap between the lens and the frame. The smaller gap, in turn allows the other components of the optical assembly to be manufactured with lower tolerances for variation, improving the overall performance of the optical assembly.

Abstract: According to an aspect, a method includes generating a first projection from a first image source, the first projection displayed on a surface of a device. The method further includes generating a second projection from a second image source, the second projection displayed on the surface of the device. The method also includes identifying at least one error in an alignment associated with the first image source based on the first projection and the second projection.
