Copolyetherimides compositions having high glass transition temperatures and outstanding ductility are presented. The copolyetherimides having Mw of at least 40,000 comprising isomeric bis(phthalimide) structural units within a relatively narrow range of isomer proportions exhibited Tgs of at least 240° C. and outstanding Notched Izod values. The copolyetherimides comprise oxydianiline residues and structural units of the formulas (I) and (II) (III). The copolyetherimides are characterized by a mole percentage of structural units derived from 4,4′-biphenol in a range from about 55% to about 85% of all bisphenol-derived structural units present in the copolyetherimide composition; a mole percentage of structural units derived from bisphenol A in a range from about 45% to about 15% of all bisphenol-derived structural units present in the copolyetherimide composition; and a total mole percentage of structural units derived from bisphenol A or 4,4′-biphenol of at least 95% of all bisphenol-derived structural units present in the copolyetherimide composition.

The present invention provides carboxy-terminated oligomeric polyester compositions useful in the preparation of “weatherable” polymeric materials, for example weatherable copolyestercarbonates. In one aspect the present invention provides an oligomeric polyester composition comprising structural units derived from at least one diacid, at least one diaryl carbonate and at least one diol. The structural units derived from the diacid are present in a molar excess of from about 10% to about 40% based on a ratio of moles of diacid-derived structural units to moles of diol-derived structural units present in the oligomeric polyester composition. The oligomeric polyester composition is further characterized by the presence of at least some phenoxy end groups.

Disclosed is a method for preparing an alkali metal salt of a hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbon which comprises the steps of (i) contacting in solvent media at least one hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbon with a base comprising an alkali metal cation; and (ii) devolatilizing the solvent media comprising alkali metal salt by adding or spraying the solvent media into a substantially water-immiscible organic solvent, said solvent being at a temperature greater than the boiling point of solvent media at the prevailing pressure. In one embodiment the solvent media comprises water, and optionally at least one water-soluble protic organic solvent.

Methods for producing the polyetherimide compositions are also disclosed herein.

Copolyetherimides comprise phthalimide structural units comprising both 3- and 4-linkages, wherein the designations 3-linkage and 4-linkage refer to the isomeric positions on the phthalimide ring in the totality of phthalimide-comprising structural units in the copolymer. The products have excellent properties, including high glass transition and heat distortion temperatures, high ductility and good melt flow properties, and low polydispersity.

Thermally stable polymers comprising resorcinol arylate chain members are prepared using an interfacial method comprising the steps of: interfacial method for preparing polymers comprising resorcinol arylate polyester chain members substantially free of anhydride linkages linking at least two mers of the polymer chain, comprising the steps of: (a) preparing an aqueous solution comprising at least one resorcinol moiety, said solution having a pH less than or equal to about 5; (b) after step (a), preparing a mixture comprising the resorcinol moiety, at least one catalyst and at least one organic solvent substantially immiscible with water; and (c) adding to the mixture from (b) at least one dicarboxylic acid dichloride while maintaining the pH between 3 and 8.5 through the presence of an acid acceptor, wherein the total molar amount of acid chloride groups is stoichiometrically deficient relative to the total molar amount of phenolic groups.

High molecular weight polycarbonates are prepared from hindered bisphenols in a reaction sequence involving conversion of the hindered bisphenol to the corresponding bischloroformate and subsequent treatment with an amine catalyst and aqueous base to effect polymerization by hydrolysis and condensation of the bischloroformate groups. Tertiary aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amine catalysts bearing at least one methyl group are found to be especially effective in promoting this polymerization reaction. Reaction rates and selectivities are shown to be superior to known methods employing tertiary amines lacking methyl groups attached to nitrogen, such as triethylamine. The inclusion of chain stoppers allows the preparation of well defined mixtures of polycarbonate oligomers from hindered bisphenols. Additionally, the methodology may be used to prepare symmetrical diaryl carbonates from hindered phenols.

In still another embodiment the present invention is an article comprising a polycarbonate comprising oxanilide structural units. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making a symmetrical or unsymmetrical oxanilide-comprising dihydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting at least one aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making an oxamate-comprising monohydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting an aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group.
