Abstract: A manufacturing method is provided during which a preform component for a turbine engine is provided. The preform component includes a substrate. An outer coating is applied over the substrate. A characteristic of the outer coating is determined. Instructions for forming a cooling aperture are revised based on the characteristic of the outer coating to provide revised instructions. The cooling aperture is formed in the outer coating and the substrate based on the revised instructions.

Abstract: A manufacturing method is provided. During this method, a preform component for a turbine engine is provided that includes a substrate. A meter section of a cooling aperture is formed in the substrate. An external coating is applied over the substrate. At least a portion of the substrate and the external coating is scanned with an imaging system to provide scan data indicative of an internal structure of the portion of the substrate and the external coating. A diffuser section of the cooling aperture is formed in the external coating and the substrate based on the scan data.

Abstract: A seal system includes a ceramic component, a metallic component, a silicon-containing layer, and a barrier layer. The ceramic component has a first surface region that defines a first surface roughness. The metallic component is situated adjacent to the first surface region and has a second surface region facing the first surface region. The silicon-containing layer is on the first surface region of the ceramic component and has a contact surface that defines a second surface roughness which is less than the first surface roughness. The barrier layer is on the metallic component and in contact with the silicon-containing layer and serves to limit interaction between silicon of the silicon-containing layer and the metallic component. The barrier layer includes at least one of alumina or MCrAlY.

Abstract: An article comprises a first portion comprising a first alloy and a second portion comprising a second alloy that is metallurgically bonded to the first portion to form a monolithic article. The metallurgical bonding involves the application of an electrical current across the bond line and results in a retention of a metallurgical structure of the first portion and of a metallurgical structure of the second portion immediately adjacent to a bond line. The first portion has a first dominant property and the second portion has a second dominant property. The first dominant property is different from the second dominant property. The first dominant property is selected to handle operating conditions at a first position of the article where the first portion is located and the second dominant property is selected to handle operating conditions at a second position of the article where the second portion is located.
