Abstract: A manufacturing method is provided. During this method, a preform component is provided for a turbine engine. The preform component includes a substrate. A preform meter section and a preform diffuser section are formed in the substrate. An internal coating is applied to at least the preform meter section to provide a meter section of a cooling aperture. External coating material is applied over the substrate. The applying of the external coating material forms an external coating over the substrate. The applying of the external coating also builds up the external coating material within the preform diffuser section to form a diffuser section of the cooling aperture.

Abstract: An article according to an exemplary embodiment of this disclosure, among other possible things includes a substrate and a barrier layer on the substrate. The barrier layer includes a bond coat comprising a matrix, diffusive particles disposed in the matrix, and gettering particles disposed in the matrix; a topcoat; and a porous interlayer disposed between the topcoat and the bond coat. The porous interlayer has a porosity that is greater than a porosity of the topcoat. A slurry composition for applying an interlayer to an article and method of applying a top coat to an article are also disclosed.

Abstract: A manufacturing method is provided during which a preform component for a turbine engine is provided. The preform component includes a substrate and a locating feature at an exterior surface of the substrate. An outer coating is applied over the substrate. The outer coating covers the locating feature. At least a portion of the preform component and the outer coating are scanned with an imaging system to provide scan data indicative of a location of the locating feature. A cooling aperture is formed in the substrate and the outer coating based on the scan data.

Abstract: A seal system includes a ceramic component, a metallic component, a coating system. The ceramic component has a first surface region that defines a first surface roughness. The metallic component is situated adjacent to the first surface region and has a second surface region facing the first surface region. The coating system includes a silicon-containing layer on the surface region of the ceramic component and barrier layer on the silicon-containing layer. The silicon containing layer has a surface in contact with the barrier layer and the barrier layer has a surface in contact with the metallic component. The surface of the barrier layer has a second surface roughness that is less than the first surface roughness. The barrier layer serves to limit interaction between silicon of the silicon-containing layer and elements of the metallic component. The barrier layer includes at least one of mullite, zircon, or hafnon.
