A method for monitoring a data processing system is proposed. The method involves the measuring of state parameters of the system. Indicators of the performance of the system are then inferred from the state parameters by applying fuzzy-logic rules. The proposed solution is based on the idea of estimating a trust value, based on the effectiveness of the corrective actions. If the previous corrective actions prove to be effective than the trust value is enhanced and the system is allowed a higher level of autonomy. Otherwise the intervention of an operator might be invoked.

A solution (400) for discovering shared software components (C1-C9) of software products (PRODa-PRODe) installed on a data processing system (110) is proposed. In order to achieve this result, for each software product the corresponding software components are aggregated into groups (Ga1-Ge1); each group includes software components that must be linked by a corresponding relationship (such as a co-location on the same operating system image). In this way, it is possible to assign a software component available on the system to its software product even when it may be used by more of them. Particularly, the operation is performed deterministically when the available software component is included in a single valid group (i.e., a group including all the required software components); in this case, the available software component (C2) is assigned to the software product (PRODb) associated with the single valid group (Gb1). Alternatively, when an (ambiguous) available software component (C4,C8,C9) is included in more valid groups, a score is calculated for each associated (eligible) software product according to the corresponding available software components; the eligible software product with the highest score (PRODc) is then selected for assigning the ambiguous software component.

In the proposed solution, an edge class (310) is associated with the specialized classes; each resource is associated with a corresponding edge object (A1; A2) instantiating the edge class (which object is identified by a corresponding edge name). More specifically, the classes are organized into a specialization tree (300); the edge classes directly depend on abstract classes, while the specialized classes in turn depend on the edge classes. Each specialized object is then associated with the edge name of the corresponding edge object. In this way, the specialized objects associated with each edge name represent the same corresponding resource. An optimized structure of a relational database (225,230) implementing the proposed solution is also proposed.
