Abstract: An apparatus comprises a laser diode configured to generate modulated light during a write operation in response to receiving modulated current having a mean amplitude that varies or is constant. A slider is configured for heat-assisted magnetic recording and to receive the modulated light. A writer heater of the slider is configured to receive power during the write operation having a magnitude that varies or is constant. A sensor is situated on or within the slider. The sensor is configured to produce a sensor signal representative of output optical power of the laser diode. Measuring circuitry is coupled to the sensor and configured to measure a change in the sensor signal indicative of a laser mode hop during the write operation.

Abstract: A method includes adding a key version tag to an encryption key store that stores encryption keys. The key version tag is inserted into a data stream. The data stream including the key version tag is written to media. The data in the data stream is erased by scrambling the encryption keys and incrementing the key version tag in the encryption store by a digit. The data stream is replaced with a replacement data pattern when the key version tag stored in the encryption store and the key version tag located in the data stream mismatch.

Abstract: First and second servo control processors are coupled to respective first and second actuators that independently position first and second heads over one or more disks of a data storage drive. The first and second servo control processors are further coupled to first and second low-latency ports. First and second unidirectional buses couple the first and second low-latency ports. The first and second unidirectional busses are operable to isochronously exchange servo positioning data between the first and second servo control processors. The first and second servo control processors each use the servo positioning data to compensate for movement caused by another of the first and second servo control processors.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for generating supply voltages in a data storage device. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes a data transducer adjacent a rotatable magnetic recording medium, the data transducer having a write coil and an electromagnetic source for thermally assisted recording by the write coil. A preamplifier/driver circuit (preamp) has a write driver adapted to supply write currents to the write coil and a source driver adapted to supply source voltage to the electromagnetic source. A voltage regulation circuit applies a first positive supply voltage to the write driver and a different, second positive supply voltage to the source driver.

Abstract: A method of controlling laser output in a heat assisted magnetic recording device can be performed by control circuitry in a data storage device. The method includes measuring a temperature, measuring laser output power of a laser, determining a power error by subtracting an optimal laser output power from the measured laser output power and comparing the power error to at least one threshold to determine whether an applied current to the laser needs to be adjusted.
