Abstract: A data storage device includes a ramp configured to support at least one head in the data storage device, and a movement mechanism coupled to the ramp and configured to move the ramp from a first position to a second position by at least one of expansion or contraction of at least a portion of the movement mechanism. The data storage device further includes a ramp motion control module operably coupled to the movement mechanism. The ramp motion control module is configured to provide the movement mechanism with a first control signal that causes the movement mechanism to move the ramp from the first position to the second position. The data storage device additionally includes a latch configured to hold the ramp.

Abstract: A data storage device includes a data storage disc, an arm, a head, a rotary actuator, and an elevator. The disc has a read/write surface defining an x-y plane. The arm includes a load beam. The head is supported by the load beam, and the head is configured to interact with the read/write surface. The rotary actuator is configured to move a first portion of the arm about a first pivot axis in the x-y plane. The elevator is configured to move the arm in a z direction relative to a vertical surface and is configured to frictionally engage the vertical surface to hold the arm at a z direction position while allowing the rotary actuator to move the first portion of the arm about the first pivot axis. In another aspect, an apparatus includes a stack block, first and second clamp arm assemblies, and first and second piezoelectric actuators.

Abstract: A data storage system include a disk drive having a rotating ramp assembly that may be moved between an engaged and disengaged position. The rotating ramp assembly may include a ramp extension that is not disposed in overlapping relation to a data storage disk location in the drive when in the disengaged position. However, in the engaged position, the ramp extension may overhang a portion of the data storage disk location. In turn, the head extension may include a ramp surface that allows a head assembly to move to a head parking surface when the rotating ramp assembly is in the engaged position. IN turn, the rotating ramp assembly may be rotated while maintaining the head assembly on the head parking surface, which may be arcuate and extend about at least a portion of the rotating ramp assembly.

Abstract: A data storage device includes at least one data storage disc, at least one head supported by a rotatable actuator arm, an elevator configured to move the rotatable actuator arm in a z direction, a first vertical guide post, a ramp assembly configured to support the head on a movable ramp, and a bracket attached to the movable ramp. The at least one head is configured to communicate with the at least one data storage disc when positioned over the at least one data storage disc. The movable ramp is moveable in a z direction parallel to the first vertical guide post. The bracket is engageable to the rotatable actuator arm so that the bracket moves along the first vertical guide post in unison with z direction motion of the rotatable actuator arm via the elevator, and the bracket is disengageable from the rotatable actuator arm.
