Disclosed is an internal combustion engine having a charcoal canister. The float chamber of the carburetor is connected to the canister via an evaporated fuel vapor passage. The carburetor has therein a slow fuel passage connected to the slow port which opens into the intake passage of the engine. The slow fuel passage is opened and, at the same time, the evaporated fuel vapor passage is closed by means of a single electromagnetic valve when the ignition switch is turned to the ON condition.

The secondary air control device comprises a first valve device actuated by an ON-OFF vacuum signal for stepwisely controlling the flow of secondary air in response to the ON-OFF vacuum signal, and; a second valve device, which is a delay system with a predetermined delay time, actuated by the ON-OFF vacuum signal for controlling the flow of secondary air. Accordingly, the secondary air control device can control the flow of secondary air, which comprises a step flow generated by the first valve device, and a delayed flow generated by the second valve device, in accordance with the ON-OFF vacuum signal.

A sensor measures the temperature of the converter and an amplifier amplifies the measurement to produce a temperature signal. A differentiator produces a time-differential of the signal multiplied by a constant representing the time constant of the sensor. An operating circuit adds the multiplied time-differential to the signal to produce a voltage that is compensated for the response delay of the temperature sensor. Electromagnetic relays respond to the voltage by diverting the gases and the secondary air around the converter.

In a coating apparatus in which after a coating liquid is applied to a web to excess through the coating slit, a desired amount of coating liquid is applied to the web by scraping off an excess of coating liquid with a recovering slit, there is provided a slit clearance adjusting device for adjusting the slit clearance of the recovering slit.
