The switching arrangement for the simultaneous application of welding current to all contacted grid points exhibits, for each contact electrode pair (4.1.1/4.2.1, . . . , 4.1.5/4.2.5), a welding transformer. Juxtaposed welding electrode pairs are floating with respect to potential in accordance with this invention so that the sole transverse connection is constituted by the transverse wire (1). A separate contact electrode pair is provided for each grid point.

A convertible single or double spot welding machine operating by the electrical resistance method for producing grids or bar grates by single spot welding or double spot welding, has a transverse row of electrodes and at least one welding transformer on one side of the welding plane. Electrically conductive connections, which pass through the welding plane, connect the welding transformer to the electrodes located on the other side of the welding plane and close the welding current circuit for single spot welding. In order to convert from single spot welding to double spot welding, the connections which pass through the welding plane are removed, selected electrodes on the side of the welding plane remote from the welding transformer are connected in pairs by current bridges, and the supply lines from the welding transformer are respectively connected to the two electrodes opposite the electrodes connected by the current bridges.

Apparatus for the feeding of transverse wires from a feed position to the welding line of a grid welding machine has at least one nozzle (9) which is directed towards the welding line, and which can be supplied with compressed air in time with the welding cycle. Parallel guides (5, 6) lead out from the nozzle, bounding either side of the transverse wire feed path, but ending ahead of the region of the welding electrodes. There are provided, in the region of the welding electrodes (1, 2), devices (11) preferably designed as magnets, for the catching and holding of the respectively fed transverse wire at the welding line. Conveyance with compressed air means that mechanical parts engaging in the welding area and susceptible to faults are avoided and at the same time changing of the longitudinal pitch of the transverse wires is facilitated.

A welding process for the manufacture of high carbon steel wire mesh for use in wire screens. In this process at least two high carbon steel wires are crossed and its junction pre-weld heated. The amount of heat applied at this pre-weld step is insufficient to cause wire fusion but sufficient to allow heat to disperse to adjacent areas of each wire. The wires are subsequently welded together and further heated by raising the temperature at the wire junction to a second temperature of at least about 1575.degree. F.

Alternatively the two poles of a second rectifier unit arranged antisymmetrically with respect to the first rectifier unit on the opposite side of the plane of weld, are connected in parallel to the opposite ends of the two busbars.

An apparatus and method are provided for forming elongated solid shapes from solid flowable materials such as metal powders, metal shot, fragments or segments of metal in a weldable condition by continuously feeding same to die means which includes two or more power rotated rolls or rollers between which the flowable material is fed and compressed to define its shape. In one form the flowable material or particles may be cold pressured welded into the shape defined by the surfaces of the rolls and their spacing. In another form, heat may be generated within or transferred to the material between the rolls by induction or resistence heating means disposed within or adjacent to the rolls, wherein the heat and the high pressure applied to the material by the rolls serves to fuse or weld the material fed therebetween into a solid porous or non-porous mass as it is fed through the rolls. Heat generated within the compressed material by the compressive force of the rolls thereon may also serve to fuse the material into a solid porous or non-porous mass.

A pair of transformers have their primary windings connected in series and each pair of said electrodes are connected to the secondary winding of one of the transformers in such a way that in operation the welding current will flow through the electrodes and through the secondary windings of the transformers in series.
