Abstract: A two-stage final drive selectively provides two gear ratios between a transmission output member and the final drive or differential in a vehicle driveline. The two-stage final drive utilizes a planetary gear arrangement having a plurality of stepped pinion gears meshing with an input sun gear and two selectively brakeable ring gears. The planet carrier is connected with the input to a differential gear arrangement. The stepped pinion planetary gear arrangement provides two underdrive ratios and has operatively connected to one of the reacting ring gears, a dual mode roller clutch which is selectively controlled to provide a path to ground in two directions when the transmission is conditioned for Park, Reverse or Neutral, and a path to ground in one direction during the operation of the transmission in the forward direction. The dual mode device will permit forward rotation of the low speed ring gear when the high speed ring gear is selected as the reaction member. The dual mode member permits a conventional parking brake arrangement to be utilized by the transmission. As an alternative to the dual mode device, a more conventional one-way device in combination with a selectively operable mechanical one-way brake arrangement can be utilized in the two-stage final drive.

Abstract: A variable speed transmission includes parallel drive and driven shafts which mount respective series of intermeshing gears of progressively increasing gear ratio for selectively transmitting power from one shaft to the other. A series of two-way roller clutches are interposed between the driven shaft and respective gear members of the series of driven gears. The roller clutches are engageable for rotatively coupling the respective gear members to the driven shaft and are disengageable for permitting relative rotation between the respective gear members and the driven shaft. Each of the roller clutches includes a cam disk having a plurality of recesses formed in its peripheral surface and a roller retainer circumferentially supporting a plurality of rollers within respective recesses in the cam disk. A hydraulically controlled actuator is connected to each of the retainers for indexing the roller retainers together with the plurality of rollers between respective limit positions within the recesses. The actuating device includes an annular plate rotatively coupled to the roller retainer and angularly spaced vanes in communication with a pair of fluid supply ducts of a stationary hydraulic control housing. One of the supply ducts provides for indexing the roller retainer to one of the limit positions, and the other of the supply ducts provides for indexing the roller retainer to the other limit position.

Abstract: A power transfer mechanism incorporated in a multiple path drive system comprises a transfer case disposed between a source of input torque and a pair of drive axles. Torque is transferred directly to the fixed axle and is transferred automatically to the steering axle through a double-acting overrunning clutch when required. Abstract: This invention relates to freewheels comprising a plurality of rollers interposed between inner and outer races formed on driving and driven members respectively, one of said races having a plurality of wedge-shaped portions equal in number to the number of rollers. The invention is particularly concerned with cageless freewheels of this construction, and discloses a means for moving said rollers between a first position in which the rollers assume an engaged position to transmit rotation to the driven member, and a second position in which the rollers are retained in a disengaged position. This is accomplished by at least one actuating lever interposed in the rollers, and being capable of limited circumferential movement between said first and second positions. Abstract: An automatic hub for each of the optionally driven wheels of a vehicle employs an annular brake shoe, axially spring loaded, to retard rotation of a sprag carrier relative to a pair of inner and outer clutch members, between which the sprag carrier operates, in order to cause the sprags to lock the wheels to their axles only when the latter are positively driven in either direction.
