    摘要: Sterically stabilized second-order nonlinear optical chromophores and devices incorporating the same are embodied in a variety of chromophore materials. An exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group and a ring-locked bridge structure therebetween, with the bridge structure being directly connected to the electron donor via a single bond. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group and a ring-locked bridge structure between the electron donor group and the electron acceptor group, with two free double bonds, one located between the donor and the bridge and the other located between the (fused) ring bridge and the acceptor. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group, and a bridge structure therebetween, with the chromophores having no carbon-carbon double bond between the donor and the (fused) ring bridge. In this class, there is only one unlocked carbon-carbon double bond between the (fused) ring bridge and the acceptor. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group, and a ring-locked bridge structure therebetween, with a built-in electron-withdrawing cyano group on the last ring of the (fused) bridge. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes any electron donor group, an electron acceptor group including a linear conjugated triene bearing four cyano groups, and any bridge structure therebetween.

    摘要: An optical article, for the transmission of electromagnetic radiation. The optical article includes a medium, which exhibits a second-order electric susceptibility greater than 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units. The medium includes polar aligned dipole subunits. Each dipole subunit has a plurality of noncentrosymmetric molecular dipoles and a connector system. Each molecular dipole has an electron donor moiety, an electron acceptor moiety, and a linking moiety. The linking moiety has a pair of covalent bonds to the connector system. Each molecular dipole has a conjugated .pi. bonding system extending from the electron donor moiety along the linking moiety to the electron acceptor moiety to permit oscillation of the molecular dipole between a ground state and an excited state, which states differ in polarity. The connector system joins the linking moieties to complete a solitary ring or a system of fused rings, which retain the molecular dipoles in substantially parallel relative relation.

    摘要: The invention relates to an optically non-linear active waveguiding material comprising an optically transparent polymer and a donor group and acceptor group-containing triphenylcarbinol as a dopant. Said dopants have a high hyperpolarizability and have a charge-transfer absorption band which is about the same as that of their corresponding compounds having only one donor-.pi.-acceptor unit. The triphenylcarbinols were found to display good solubility in polymers. Nitro-functionalized triphenylcarbinols are preferred because of their charge-transfer absorption band at a low wavelength (.lambda..sub.max at about 290 nm). Aldehyde-functionalized calix(4)arenes were also found to have this low wavelength charge-transfer absorption band (.lambda..sub.max at about 270 nm). Triphenyls comprising stilbene donor-.pi.-acceptor units are preferred because of their high hyperpolarizability.

    摘要: The invention provides a nonlinear optical material comprising a compound represented by the general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 denotes an electron attractive group, R.sup.2 denotes a group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, methyl group, methoxy group and electron attractive group, R.sup.3 denotes a straight-chain alkylene group, and X denotes an oxygen or sulfur atom. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a nonlinear optical material comprising the steps of dissolving a compound represented by the general formula (1) in an organic solvent, and evaporating the solvent while keeping its temperature constant or lowering its temperature, thereby growing a crystal of the compound represented by the general formula (1). The nonlinear optical material of the invention possessing a molecular structure realized by linking structures having a strong electron attractive group and weak electron donative portion with straight-chain alkylene portions, and thus a nonlinear optical material having a shortened absorption edge wavelength and excellent crystallinity may be obtained. These nonlinear optical materials can be effectively utilized as the nonlinear optical material for an optical wavelength converter.
