    摘要: Sterically stabilized polyene-bridged second-order nonlinear chromophores and devices incorporating the same are embodied in a variety of chromophore materials, and particularly in chromophore materials are configured within an oxygen-free operating environment. An exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group and a &pgr;-conjugate bridge structure therebetween. The bridge is a polyene structure having a five-, six- or seven-membered ring to lock one carbon-carbon double bond. The bridge contains an unlocked conjugate diene unit which connects the bridge ring and the acceptor. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group and a ring-locked bridge structure between the electron donor group and the electron acceptor group. The bridge structure includes a fused double-or triple-ring structure which functions to lock two or three double bonds. The bridge also contains an unlocked conjugate diene unit to connect the the bridge ring and the acceptor. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an acceptor, and a bridge structure therebetween, wherein the acceptor is a five- or six-membered ring locked tricyano electron acceptor. Another exemplary preferred chromophore includes an electron donor group, an electron acceptor group, and a bridge structure therebetween, with the bridge structure including a bithiophene unit. A preferred host polymer for the chromophores is poly[bisphenol A carbonate-co-4,4′-(3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexylidene)diphenol carbonate].

The compositions have high first molecular electronic hyperpolarizability (.beta.) and therefore display high second order non-linear optical properties when incorporated into non-linear optical devices.     摘要: This invention provides chiral nonracemic compound of formula: ##STR1## wherein n and m are 0 or 1, but one of n or m must be 1; k=0 or 1; B=COO or OOC; X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3 and X.sub.4 are either H, an electron donor or an electron acceptor where at least one of the groups X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3 or X.sub.4 is an electron acceptor and at least one of these groups is an electron donor and when one of X.sub.1 or X.sub.3 is an electron donor, the other is an electro a acceptor and when one of X.sub.2 or X.sub.4 is an electron donor, the other is an electron acceptor; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 can be various substituted and unsubstituted alkanes and monoalkenes. Compounds provided include those where one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is a chiral non-racemic tail group, particularly a group selected from --O--C.sup.* H(CH.sub.3)R.sub.c, --O--C.sup.* H(CH.sub.3)COOR.sub.d, and --O--CH.sub.2 C.sup.* HF--C.sup.* HF--R.sub.2 in which the .sup.* indicates an asymmetric carbon enriched in one stereoconfiguration where R.sub.c, R.sub.d, and R.sub.e can be various substituted and unsubstituted alkanes and monoalkenes. The compounds of this invention are useful in the preparation of FLC mixtures and non-linear optical materials.

    摘要: An optical article is disclosed containing, for the transmission of electromagnetic radiation, a medium exhibiting a second order polarization susceptibility greater than 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units comprised of a linear polymer containing as pendant groups polar aligned noncentrosymmetric molecular dipoles having an electron donor moiety linked through a conjugated .pi. bonding system to an electron acceptor moiety to permit oscillation of the molecular dipole between a ground state exhibiting a first dipole moment and an excited state exhibiting a differing dipole moment. The linear polymer contains repeating units derived from vinyl addition polymerization, at least 5 percent of the repeating units incorporate the molecular dipoles as pendant groups, and the molecular dipoles include a sulfonyl electron acceptor moiety.
