A vestigial sideband VSB receiver includes a digital processing part for selecting a desired channel frequency via an antenna and converting the desired channel frequency to an intermediate frequency to digitize a predetermined band of the intermediate frequency, a carrier wave restoring part for extracting pilot components from a signal of the digitized pass band to restore carrier waves, and a demodulator for separating components I and Q from the signal of the digitized pass band and multiplying the components with a complex carrier wave, which is restored in the carrier wave restoring part. The carrier waves are restored by extracting the pilot signals from the pass band and detecting the symmetrical errors of the carrier wave frequency, so that the carrier wave may be stably obtained and pursued with relation to the both positive and negative frequency offsets.

A second mixer (36, 38) mixes the bandwidth limited signal into an intermediate signal with an in-phase component and a quadrature component, and an adder (40) adds one component of the intermediate signal to the other. A similar up-converter performs the reverse process.

The triple-conversion radio receiver selects one of a plurality of digital television signals for upconversion to that portion of the electromagnetic frequency spectrum above the channels that are used for television broadcasting, amplifies a first intermediate-frequency signal in a first intermediate frequency band generated by that upconversion, amplifies a second intermediate-frequency signal in a second intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified first intermediate-frequency signal, and supplies a third intermediate-frequency signal in a third intermediate frequency band generated by downconverting the amplified second intermediate-frequency signal. This third intermediate-frequency signal is the final intermediate-frequency signal supplied to the analog-to-digital converter for being linearly converted to a digitized third intermediate-frequency signal. Digital synchrodyning circuitry synchrodynes the digitized third intermediate-frequency signal to baseband and thereby generates at least a real component of digital baseband signal. Circuitry responsive to at least the real component of the digital baseband signal recovers a stream of digital data descriptive of the video and audio portions of television programming.

Symbol decoding circuitry responsive to the real and imaginary digital sample streams of QAM symbol coding generates a digital data stream. Data synchronization recovery circuitry recovers data synchronizing information included in the digital data stream. A video decoder of decompression type, such as an MPEG-2 video decoder responsive to portions of the digital data stream, as selected in response to the data synchronizing information, generates digital signals descriptive of red, green and blue video signals.

A VSB receiver and a method for processing a receiving signal in the same are disclosed, which is not subject to frequency offset. The VSB receiver includes an intermediate frequency signal generator generating an intermediate frequency band signal from a received signal; a demodulator generating a complex base band signal consisting of an I channel signal and a Q channel signal using the intermediate frequency band signal and at least one local carrier wave signal; and a complex base band matched filter filtering at least one of the I channel signal and the Q channel signal. In the VSB receiver, since a complex signal responds to a required channel of the I channel and the Q channel, it is possible to prevent performance of the system from being deteriorated by frequency offset.

A polarity detection circuit for an FPLL demodulated signal including a small DC pilot recovers the DC pilot by determining the DC levels of the demodulated output signals both with and without the DC pilot. A zero carrier condition is created for determining the DC level of the output signal without the DC pilot. The two DC levels are subtracted and limited and the polarity of the recovered DC pilot is used to control the operation of a polarity inverter to assure that the output signal has a desired polarity.
