This disclosure describes a device for converting binary coded angle information into the analog angular position of the rotor winding of a conventional counter-reaction resolver. The device is operative to provide two periodic rectangular wave signals of equal amplitudes and of time durations respectively proportional to the absolute values of the sine and cosine of the angle. These periodic rectangular wave signals are respectively applied to the stator windings of the resolver via two amplifiers respectively. Each of these amplifiers comprises a counter-reaction loop comprising a compensation winding and a capacitor. The rotor winding of the resolver is inserted in a servocontrol loop comprising an amplifier and a commutator which are connected only in the simultaneous absence of the two periodical rectangular wave signals.

A digital to resolver or synchro converter in which a simple ladder network and multiplexing are used to provide highly accurate outputs at a low cost is shown. An N bit digital word representing the angle is stored in a register and N-2 bits of the word and its complement alternately switched to control a simple R, 2R-2N 3 R ladder network which in alternate time periods will provide sine and cosine outputs. Further switching logic switches the ladder network output to respective sine or cosine output channels. Each output channel provides a positive or negative output in response to inputs obtained by decoding the first two bits of the digital word. The simple approximation used in the ladder network, although it does not provide absolute sine and cosine accuracy does provide a tangent, the function of practical importance, which has the required accuracy.

An apparatus for providing an analog indication of altitude in response to a digital altitude information signal, such as from a digital air data computer. The apparatus preferably provides coarse-fine altitude selection. Means, such as a digital-toresolver converter operatively connected to a resolver, provides an analog synchro signal in response to the digital altitude information signal. A servo network, such as one which includes a brushless D. C. motor, is operatively connected to the synchro signal providing means, such as to the resolver. The servo network provides an analog servo driving signal which is utilized to drive an analog display device, such as one which includes an altitude counter and analog pointer in which a geneva drive transfer mechanism interconnects the least two significant display positions, such as the tens and hundreds positions of the altimeter display.

In a method and apparatus for generating digital information concerning the angular position of the rotor of a phase shifter, such as a resolver or a synchro, in which a multiphase AC voltage is supplied to the phase shifter to produce a rotating magnetic field which induces a secondary AC voltage of the same frequency as the supply voltage at a phase angle proportional to the angular position of the rotor, the simultaneous readout of a large number of phase shifters can be obtained by frequency dividing a control AC voltage of a predetermined frequency to form a plurality of AC voltages, forming the multiphase AC voltage and a code which varies cyclically with the same frequency as the multiphase AC voltage from the plurality of AC voltages, whereby the position of the vector of the rotating magnetic field derived from the multiphase AC voltage corresponds to a given value of the code at any given moment; and forming readout pulse at substantially given moment; and forming readout pulse at substantially the zero transition of the secondary voltage to thereby produce a readout or registration of the cyclic code.
