The controller includes an interface for receiving an image having a bi-level black data layer compressed in an Edge Delta and Runlength (EDRL) compression format and a continuous tone (contone) CMYK data layer. Also included is an EDRL expander and a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) decoder unit for expanding the image by simultaneously decompressing the two data layers in parallel, as well as a halftoner and compositor unit for halftoning the contone CMYK data layer into bi-level CMYK data layer and compositing the bi-level black data layer over the bi-level CMYK data layer to form a composited bi-level CMYK image. The controller further includes a processor and memory arrangement configured to control the interface, the expander and decoder unit, and the halftoner and compositor unit, and further configured to transmit the composited bi-level CMYK image to a memory buffer of the pagewidth printer via a printhead interface.

The mechanism includes an electric motor and a sheet feed roller, a paper drive roller and pinch wheels operatively actuated by the motor to feed paper through a media path defined through the printer. The mechanism also includes an ink cartridge with integral printhead arranged in the media path, and a capping mechanism configured to cap the printhead. The motor is configured to drive the paper drive roller and the pinch wheels at a start and an end of the media path when running in a forward direction, and to drive the sheet feed roller when reversed, such that the sheet feed roller engages a topmost sheet from a sheet feeder of the printer and transports said sheet to the paper drive roller.

Where classification of the image is required, the server classifies the image (e.g. the image comprises either text or photograph), and based on that classification determines a codec with which to encode the image, and a fidelity to use on the encoding. The server performs that encoding with the codec and the fidelity, and then sends this encoded image to the client.

This invention generates efficient encoded data to restore original image data from reduced image data. An input unit inputs block data of 2×2 pixels from original image data. A converter generates reduced image data having a size smaller than the original image data by sampling one pixel data at a preset position in the input block data. A generator generates encoded data to restore three non-sampling target pixel data in each block data so as to restore the original image data from the reduced image data generated by the resolution converter. To do this, the generator determines whether all non-sampling target pixels in a block of interest are restorable from a sampling target pixel in the block of interest or from sampling target pixels in three blocks adjacent to the block of interest, and generates and outputs three kinds of additional information based on the determination result.
