A control unit and method for operating a gap-type electromagnetic clutch or brake is provided which reduces audible chatter, screeching caused by belt slippage and related wear and tear on the driving and driven components. The operating winding of the clutch or brake is energized to cause the gap between an armature and rotor to close, energization of the winding is then reduced to initially reduce the torque coupling between the armature and rotor and finally energization of the winding is gradually increased to full energization so as to provide a gradually increasing torque coupling between the armature and rotor.

An electromagnetic device includes an electromagnet having one electrical coil and an annular member of high permeability having a pair of radially spaced first and second circumferential magnetic resistance portions. The first and second armatures are disposed in opposed relation to the first and second magnetic resistance portions, respectively. At least one of the first and second magnetic resistance portions is interrupted by circumferentially spaced magnetic bridge portions having such a size as to allow a predetermined amount of magnetic flux to pass therethrough to attract the one of the first and second armatures, disposed in opposed relation to the other of the first and second magnetic resistance portions, into contact with the annular member when excitation current of lower magnitude is applied to the coil. When excitation current of higher magnitude is applied to the coil, the magnetic flux passes through the first and second armatures, thereby attracting them into contact with the annular member.

A normal and reverse rotating mechanism of this invention includes a normal and reverse rotating member capable of normal and reverse rotations, a first rotation transmitting member for transmitting normal rotation to the normal and reverse rotating member, a second rotation transmitting member for transmitting reverse rotation to the normal and reverse rotating member, a drive source rotatable in one direction for imparting a rotational drive to the normal and reverse rotating member, first spring clutch means for operatively associating the first rotation transmitting member and the drive source with each other, second spring clutch means for operatively associating the second rotation transmitting member and the drive source with each other, and control lever means for controlling the first and second spring clutch means so that when one of the two spring clutch means is operatively associated with the drive source, the other spring clutch means is not operatively associated with the drive source. The invention does not require normal and reverse rotations of the drive source itself and does not require a bulky and complicated mechanism such as an electromagnetic clutch.

A wrap-down spring clutch includes a drum and a spring which are selectively engaged by a solenoid. The solenoid has a coil, which when energized, extends a ferromagnetic plunger. When the coil is energized the plunger is extended out against the spring and urges the same into frictional engagement with the drum. The drum is also ferromagnetic, such that the activation of the coil simultaneously magnetizes the plunger, and creates a magnetic attraction between the plunger and the drum which further urges the plunger against the spring and the drum to produce a wrap-down pressure which effects quick and secure clutch engagement.

In the two speed magnetic clutch drive illustrated, two magnets having oppositely facing pole ends are rigid with each other and axially shiftable selectively into gripping engagement with one or the other of axially fixed disk armatures driven at different speeds. The magnet unit is supported from a driven shaft through angularly spaced and tangentially extending leaf springs which provide a frictionless mounting for the magnet unit and, as an incident to engagement of either clutch, are stressed to provide the force for separating the magnet unit from the armature disk when the clutch magnet is deenergized.
