These filters employ a metal oxide type of varistor material as a dielectric between capacitor electrodes with a high dielectric constant Epsilon , and the non-linearity of current flow through the varistor material with respect to applied voltage varies by such an exponential factor that the filter functions in usual manner as a high frequency bypass for low energy interference, but as an ohmic current bypass for high energy interference regardless of frequency.

A branching filter network arrangement for use in microwave frequency division multiplex communications systems is disclosed. The network includes at least one branching filter having a center frequency higher than the highest frequency of the operating frequencies within the pass band and at least one branching filter having a center frequency lower than the lowest frequency of the operating frequencies within the pass band. As a result, primary delay distortion in the highest and lowest frequencies of the operating frequencies are eliminated, and only secondary delay distortion requires compensation which can be easily accomplished in the intermediate-frequency stage of the receiver.

A multiple section microwave filter capable of being accurately tailored to special frequency response requirements over wide bandwidths in disclosed. The tailored response filter consists of an array of cascaded traveling-wave directional filters. Each filter section couples power out of a through transmission line into suitable microwave terminations. Due to the directional characteristics of traveling-wave directional filters, there is no interaction between sections. Thus the frequency response of the array is the product of the transfer functions of the individual sections. The coupling constants and the center frequencies of individual filter sections are tailored, i.e., synthesized, to result in a set of individual transfer functions which will produce the desired overall response. The tailored response filter can be used in wide bandwidth microwave systems for phase and amplitude weighting and for equalization functions.

A variable equalizer is provided which, using a single variable resistor, can make compensations in both the directions of the gain side, and the loss side and can set a reference gain as desired.An input signal to be equalized is received as an antiphase input signal of a differential amplifier, an output signal which has been equalized is fed back to the antiphase input signal, and a difference signal between an in-phase input signal and the antiphase input signal is delivered as an output. A resistor is connected between an input terminal and ground, first and second impedance circuits and a variable resistor are connected between an intermediate point of the first-mentioned resistor and ground in the order mentioned, and a voltage at the junction point between the first and second impedance circuits is used as the in-phase input signal.

In a band division type equalizer having a plurality of equalizer sections, the adjustment of each of the equalizer sections is accomplished through measurement of characteristics of a transmission means to be equalized and calculation of the difference of the measured characteristics and the desired characteristics. Since all of the equalizer sections are adjusted at the same time according to the result of the calculation, the adjustment does not suffer from interaction among the sections. An adjustable variable, for instance, a variable resistor for each section is mounted in a single setting unit separable from the rest of the equalizer circuit. Thus, after completely adjusting the setting unit, the setting unit is connected to the rest of the equalizer sections, and then the desired delay characteristic can be obtained. The equalizer section is for instance a Moschytz type delay circuit.
