Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may transmit a paging indicator message to one or more user equipment (UEs) in a group of UEs. The base station may receive, based at least in part on the paging indicator message, a first response message from the one or more UEs. The first response message may be received using a resource that is shared with a random access channel message for the group of UEs. The base station may transmit, based at least in part on the first response message, a second response message to the one or more UEs.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) receives a first synchronization signal (SS) block including a first codeword and a second SS block including a second codeword. Each codeword is based on a linear encoding of a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) payload. The PBCH payloads include different timing indicators. The SS blocks are received at different times separated by a time increment. The UE determines, based on the time increment, one or more hypotheses of combined decoding metrics for the first codeword and the second codeword, and decodes the first codeword based on each of at least one hypothesis in the one or more hypotheses. The at least one hypothesis includes a correct hypothesis. The UE determines the first codeword based on an error detection procedure such as CRC verification performed when decoding the first codeword based on the correct hypothesis.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus that support controlled transmission and directional reception of RTS and/or CTS messages, are described. Controlled transmission may include transmitting a same RTS message multiple times in the same direction and/or transmitting an RTS message with a length that is multiple times longer than a standard RTS message. In an aspect, a receiver may determine spatial directions of a plurality of transmitters including a first transmitter and at least one other transmitter, and may perform a beam sweep in the determined spatial directions for receiving one or more RTS messages. A transmitter may determine that a receiver is to perform a beam sweep in K different spatial directions, and may transmit a same RTS message for a data transmission K times in the same direction or an RTS message with a length approximately K times longer than a standard RTS message, during a duration of the beam sweep.

The UE may transmit a random access channel (RACH) message to the base station using a resource and/or a RACH waveform selected based on the selected DL beam based at least in part on the selected DL beam and the nature of correspondence.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A wireless communications system operating in millimeter wave (mmW) spectrum may utilize synchronization signals for beam tracking. A synchronization signal (e.g., primary synchronization signals (PSS), secondary synchronization signals (SSS), etc.), beam reference signal, and/or control signal may be designed to facilitate beam tracking. A synchronization signal structure based on a repeated sequence in the time domain may facilitate searching for different beams in a timely manner. In some cases, the repeated synchronization signal structure may be achieved by using a larger tone spacing, and hence having shorter symbol duration and repeating the short symbols in the time domain. The repeated structure may be further used to encode additional information (e.g., facilitated by the resulting additional degrees of freedom). Additionally or alternatively, a synchronization signal (e.g., SSS) may be discrete Fourier transform (DFT) pre-coded to achieve better peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR).

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station and user equipment (UE) may use subframe configurations that include dynamically scheduled channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) symbols. For example, a base station may identify a subframe configuration that includes one or more sets of CSI-RS symbols of a subframe. The base station may indicate to a UE whether sets of CSI-RS symbols may be enabled or disabled during the subframe. The UE may receive multiple CSI-RSs at different locations within the subframe as indicated by the base station, and transmit CSI feedback to the base station based on at least one of the received CSI-RSs. In some examples, multiple base stations may coordinate the use of subframe configurations that include CSI-RS symbols that may be enabled or disabled.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A user equipment (UE) may identify a number of beam directions that satisfy a transmission power condition. The UE may select a beam direction for a random access signal by choosing one of the beam directions that satisfies additional criteria, such as transmitting a random access message at the next opportunity. The transmission power may be selected based on a target receive power and a path loss for the selected beam. In some cases, if the sum of the path loss for a beam direction and the target receive power exceeds a maximum transmission power by more than a predetermined amount, the random access signal will not be transmitted using that beam. In some cases, if a response to the random access is not received, a different beam direction may be selected, the transmission power may be increased, or both.
