摘要: A device to determine the level of a substance of interest in a patient's body and provide a therapeutic amount of medicament is disclosed. The level of a substance of interest in the patient's body is determined by iontopheretically sampling the patient's blood and then analyzing the resulting sample to determine the level of the substance of interest. The information about the level of a substance of interest is transmitted to an implanted drug pump in the patient's body. In the preferred embodiment, the substance of interest sensor is an external sensor applied to the user's skin. In an alternate embodiment, the sensor may be implanted. The preferred method of transmitting information about the level of a substance of interest determined by the sensor is transmitted to an implanted drug pump in the patient's body is via a so called “body bus”. The “body bus” is a telemetry system where the patient's own body provides the interconnection between the iontopheretic device and the implanted drug pump.

摘要: Apparatus and method for managing chronic home care of patients with one or more implanted medical devices (IMDs) includes a mobile portable device for use by a visiting nurse. Specifically, the portable device integrates various systems to enable the nurse to schedule her day and get directions to a first and subsequent visit destination via a GPS system or equivalent. The portable device includes an identification system including a security protocol to identify the nurse/home health care provider. Additionally, the portable device incorporates a communication system such as a cellular phone that would enable the nurse to connect to other clinical support personnel such as a doctor or a specialist. The portable device further includes a wireless communication system that enables communication between the portable device and one or more IMDs in a patient. Upon arrival at the patient's home, the nurse may download data from the one or more IMDs directly into the portable device. This data could in turn be downloaded immediately or later to a remote viewing center via conventional data transmission systems. Other medical data such as blood pressure measurements and vital physiologic signals may be entered into the portable device using a digitizer pen, voice input or equivalent. Similar to the IMD data, this medical data could be transmitted to the remote location from the portable device.

摘要: A method and apparatus for determining vulnerable plaque in a cardiovascular lumen is disclosed. In one embodiment, a guide member comprising a temperature sensor and a distance sensor are inserted into the cardiovascular lumen. The temperature of the cardiovascular wall is measured with the temperature sensor, and the distance from the temperature sensor to the cardiovascular wall is determined. The cardiovascular wall temperature is adjusted based on the distance determination, and the vulnerable plaque is determined based on the adjusted wall temperature measurement.

摘要: A patient monitoring system in cooperation with IMDs provides information, direction and counseling to patients. Specifically, a combination of lifestyle parameters, such as, for example, diet, exercise, weight, medication and environmental factors such as, for example, temperature, UV factor, pollen count, humidity, air pollution index, are integrated to provide a seamless, comprehensive, chronic monitoring system and support for patients. The system includes a home monitor, IMD, and a remote expert station in operable data communications therebetween. Personal data such as weight, environmental data, food data from refrigerators and pantry, type of exercise equipment, medication, physiologically significant events, physician treatment plan and the like are integrated with IMD data to provide continuous patient care, counseling, consultation and notification. The remote expert station enables doctors and other health care providers to review, monitor current and long-term trends of the patient's health status and dispense clinical care as needed.

摘要: The present invention provides for an encryption apparatus, system, and method in which data from an Implantable Medical Device (IMD) and a data center could be transferred based on a differentiated encryption system. The encryption scheme allows for the differentiation, segregation, and classification of data at required or needed levels of security. Before transfer of the data, either from an IMD or any other part of a support network for the IMDs, the encryption device begins to distinguish the data. The variable data is then classified based on various levels of security having distinct encryption protocols. After classification the data is encrypted based on the data's level of security. The data is then transmitted. Upon being received the data is then segregated based on whether the data is encrypted. The encrypted data is then de-encrypted and interpreted.

摘要: A transvenous implantable medical device adapted for implantation in a body, and which is particularly adapted for use in a vessel such as the coronary sinus or cardiac great vein. The implantable medical device may take the form of a lead or catheter, and includes an extendable distal fixation member such as a helix. In one embodiment, the fixation member is a helix constructed of a shape memory metal or other super-elastic material. Upon deployment, the helix assumes a predetermined helix shape larger than the diameter of the lead body diameter. The helix functions to wedge or fix the lead within the vessel in a manner that does not impede the flow of blood through the vessel. The helix may be retracted for ease of repositioning and/or removal. In one embodiment of the invention, the fixation member may be advanced using a stiffening member such as a stylet. In another embodiment, the helix is coupled to a coiled conductor such that rotation of the conductor extends or retracts the helix. According to yet another aspect of the invention, a helix lumen including a flexible fluid-tight seal may be utilized to house the helix when it is in the retracted position.

摘要: A medical device known as a catheter is configured with a variable infusion rate to deliver a therapeutic substance such as pharmaceutical compositions, genetic materials, and biologics to treat a variety of medical conditions such as pain, spastisity, cancer, and other diseases in humans and other animals. The variable infusion rate catheter provides clinician with increased flexibility, versatility, and many other improvements. The variable infusion rate catheter has a Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) flow restriction with a variable infusion rate. The MEMS flow restriction is fluidly coupled to the catheter to receive therapeutic substance dispensed from a therapeutic substance delivery device and restrict the therapeutic substance flow to a desired infusion rate. Many embodiments of the variable infusion rate catheter and its methods of operation are possible.
