An optical head is driven in a tracking direction with respect to a rotating optical disc. The optical head includes a light source, an optical block, a condenser shifter, and a rotating mechanism. The light source is used to read and write data from/on the optical disc. The optical block supports the light source. The condenser shifter includes a condenser, a movable body, a base, a focus direction drive mechanism and a tracking direction drive mechanism. The condenser focuses light, emitted from the light source, toward the optical disc. The movable body supports the condenser. The base supports the movable body elastically such that the movable body is able to shift in a focus direction and in the tracking direction. The focus and tracking direction drive mechanisms are provided to shift the movable body in the focus and tracking directions, respectively. The rotating mechanism rotates the condenser shifter around a predetermined axis with respect to the optical block on at least one of a first plane, which is parallel to the tracking direction and perpendicular to the optical disc, and a second plane, which is perpendicular to the tracking direction.

A slider connected to a floating head assembly having a magnetic head at a tail or air flow-out end is controlled by a load beam at a position of air flow-in end via a gimbal. When the slider is brought close to a disk-shaped revolving recording medium, its posture is such that the gap at the flow-in end is wider than that at the flow-out end. An air film is rapidly formed starting from the flow-out end to provide stability and cushioning effects between the slider and the disk-shaped revolving recording medium. As a result, a soft landing due to the laminar air flow is automatically achieved.

An optical disc apparatus includes a withdrawal means for moving an objective lens (32) to a position distant from an optical disc (1) during an inactive duration of intermittent recording or reproducing operation. A means for regulating or fixing the objective lens (32) at the position distant from the optical disc (1) is further provided. Thus, even in a noncontrolled state during the inactive duration, it is possible to prevent collision of the objective lens (32) with the optical disc (1). As a result, both power saving and safety of the apparatus can be attained.

Guide parts and driving parts are independently provided for an optical head and a magnetic bias field generator, and a relative position control part controls the relative positions of the two so that the both can access recording medium tracks individually. Furthermore, a magnetic pattern track for use as the detection signal of the absolute position of the magnetic bias field generator to the magneto-optical recording medium is formed on the magneto-optical recording medium itself, and a positioning control part of the magnetic bias field generator using this magnetic pattern track is provided, so that the positioning control of the absolute position of the magnetic bias field generator with respect to the magneto-optical recording medium may be realized.

A converter that records or reproduces information to or from a recording medium while making a movement relative to the recording medium is mounted on a slider. The slider has at least a pair of openings on a side face thereof, and airflow generated by the movement relative to the recording medium flows in via one of the paired openings, passes in a vicinity of a surface of the converter other than a surface thereof facing the recording medium, and thereafter flows out via the other one of the paired openings. With this, the ability to cool the converter is improved.

An optical disc clamp mechanism that is capable of selectively playing back either of a compact disc or a mini disc. The clamp mechanism includes a circular disc receiving section for contacting a reference surface of either of the compact disc or the mini disc and further includes a magnetic clamp unit for clamping the mini disc by magnetic attraction with a magnetically attractable member of the mini disc. A first conical or spherical taper cone portion for engaging the center hole of the mini disc is mounted to the disc receiving section and a second conical or spherical taper cone portion for engaging the center hole of the compact disc is mounted to the disc receiving section. The first taper cone portion is located inwardly of the second taper cone portion and protrudes from the second taper cone portion in the axial direction. The magnetic clamp unit further includes a stopper element for preventing detachment of the first and second taper cone portions from the disc receiving section. Accordingly, the optical disc clamp mechanism independently affects the centering of a mini disc and a compact disc to allow either of the discs to be centered.

An optical head and supporting apparatus has an optical head for irradiating a parallel beam in a direction perpendicular to a recording surface of an optical disk, an objective lens rigidly mounted on the optical head for receiving the parallel beam from the optical head, tracking drive coils for driving the optical head over the whole recording range in a first direction transverse to the recording tracks of the optical disk, focusing drive coils for driving the optical head in a second direction perpendicular to the recording surface of the optical disk, and a support mechanism made of wire-shaped elastic bodies for supporting the optical head freely movably in the first and second directions over the whole recording range in the first direction of the optical head. The support mechanism is fixedly mounted through elastic bodies on a part of a structural body independent of movement of the optical head. Seek, tracking and focusing movements of a beam spot can be achieved in such a way that the wire-shaped eleastic bodies are elastically deformed by forces developed through the tracking drive coils and focusing drive coils thereby to move the optical head two-dimensionally.

A collision preventive member that limits displacements of an objective lens in a focusing direction is provided. The collision preventive member includes a first limiting portion that limits displacements of the objective lens present within a first region while allowing a movable range of the objective lens in the focusing direction to overlap a deflection range of the optical disc within the first region, and a second limiting portion that limits displacements of the objective lens present within a second region in establishing a relation such that the movable range of the objective lens in the focusing direction does not overlap the deflection range of the optical disc within the second region. A controller that controls the objective lens in such a manner that the objective lens is located within the second region in a non-focusing state of the objective lens is provided. It is thus possible to prevent a collision between an optical disc and the objective lens under the environment where vibrations are applied.
