Abstract: Sample data and metadata related to spatial regions in images may be received from a coded video signal. It is determined whether specific spatial regions in the images correspond to a specific region of luminance levels. In response to determining the specific spatial regions correspond to the specific region of luminance levels, signal processing and video compression operations are performed on sets of samples in the specific spatial regions. The signal processing and video compression operations are at least partially dependent on the specific region of luminance levels.

Abstract: In an encoder, a high-dynamic range (HDR) image is encoded using a family of local forward reshaping functions selected according to an array of forward mapping indices (FMI) indicating which local forward reshaping function needs to be used for each pixel in the HDR image to generate a reshaped standard dynamic range (SDR) image. A decoder, given the reshaped SDR image, iteratively generates a reconstructed HDR image and estimated reshaped SDR images by adjusting a local FMI array and a local array of backward mapping indices (BMI) until an error metric related to the difference between the local BMI and FMI arrays and the difference between the estimate SDR images and the reshaped SDR image satisfy a convergence criterion. Techniques for generating families of local forward reshaping functions and local backward reshaping functions based on a global forward reshaping function are also presented.

Abstract: 3D mapping statistics are generated for a first image of a first dynamic range and a second image of a second dynamic range different from the first dynamic range. Multivariate multiple regression (MMR) coefficients are generated by solving an optimization problem formulated using an MMR matrix built with the 3D mapping statistics without a letterbox constraint, and used to generate chroma mappings for predicting chroma codeword values of the second image. It is determined whether a letterbox exists in the images. If so, it is determined whether the chroma mappings accurately predict chroma codeword values in the second image. A reconstructed image generated by a recipient device by backward reshaping one of the images is rendered by a display device operating in conjunction with the recipient device.

Abstract: Given HDR and SDR video inputs representing the same content, segment-based methods are described to generate a backward-compatible reshaped SDR video which preserves the artistic intent or “look” of the inputs and satisfies other coding requirements. For each frame in a segment, reshaping functions are generated based on a support frames set determined based on a sliding window of frames that is adjusted based on scene cuts in the segment and which may include frames from both the current segment and neighboring segments. For luma reshaping, a mapping that preserves the cumulative density function of the luminance histogram values in the EDR and SDR inputs is combined with a minimum codeword allocation derived based on the EDR signal and the support frame set. For chroma reshaping, methods for segment-based forward and backward reshaping using multivariate, multi-regression models are also presented.

Abstract: Relatively low dynamic range images or image partitions are converted into relatively high dynamic range images or image partitions that comprise reconstructed pixel values having a higher dynamic range than pixel values of the relatively low dynamic range images. Information relating to reconstructed pixel values of the relatively high dynamic range images and pixel values of the relatively low dynamic range images is collected. Prediction parameters are derived from the collected information. A predicted image or image partition is predicted from a relatively low dynamic range image or image partition based on the prediction parameters and comprises predicted pixel values having the higher dynamic range than pixel values of the relatively low dynamic range image or image partition.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to images. More particularly, an embodiment of the present invention relates to the pixel group segmented quantization and de-quantization of the residual signal in layered coding of high dynamic range images. By assigning the pixels in the residual image to different pixel groups based on the pixel value of the corresponding pixel in the decoded base layer signal, and by applying pixel group quantizing functions to assigned pixels a more efficient coding can be achieved.
