Compounds, phosphor materials and apparatus related to nacaphite family of materials are presented. Potassium and rubidium based nacaphite family compounds and phosphors designed by doping divalent rare earth elements in the sites of alkaline earth metals in the nacaphite material families are descried. An apparatus comprising the phosphors based on the nacaphite family materials are presented herein. The compounds presented is of formula A2B1-yRyPO4X where the elements A, B, R, X and suffix y are defined such that A is potassium, rubidium, or a combination of potassium and rubidium and B is calcium, strontium, barium, or a combination of any of calcium, strontium and barium. X is fluorine, chlorine, or a combination of fluorine and chlorine, R is europium, samarium, ytterbium, or a combination of any of europium, samarium, and ytterbium, and y ranges from 0 to about 0.1.

A photoelectrolysis cell is described herein. The cell includes a photoelectrode based on a material having the general formula (Ln1−xMx)(Nb1−yTay)O1+xN2−x. Ln is at least one lanthanide element; M is at least one alkaline earth metal; 0≦x≦0.99; and 0≦y≦1. The photoelectrolysis cell further includes a counter-electrode formed from at least one metal or metallic alloy. An electrolyte which is in contact with both the photoelectrode and the counter-electrode is another component of the cell, along with a means for collecting hydrogen produced by the cell. A related process for producing hydrogen in a photoelectrolysis cell is also described.

A phosphor comprises a material having a formula of AMgD10O17:Eu2+,Mn2+, wherein A is at least an alkaline-earth metal selected from the group consisting of Ba, Sr, Ca, and combinations thereof; and D is at least a metal selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga, In, and combinations thereof; wherein Eu2+ ions are present in an amount from about 10 to about 50 atom percent of a combined quantity of A ions and europium ions, and Mn2+ ions are present in an amount from about 5 to about 30 atom percent of a combined quantity of magnesium ions and manganese ions. The phosphor is used alone or in conjunction with other phosphors to convert UV/blue radiation emitted by a source, such as an LED or a gas discharge device, to visible light.
