Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate having a first transparent substrate and a pixel electrode, a second substrate having a second transparent substrate, a first common electrode, a second common electrode, and an insulating film disposed between the first common electrode and the second common electrode, and a liquid crystal layer. The first common electrode is disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the insulating film, and includes a first opening and a first electrode portion. The second common electrode is disposed between the insulating film and the second transparent substrate, and includes a second electrode portion overlapping the first opening.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a first light guide element and a light-emitting element. The liquid crystal layer contains stringy polymers and liquid crystal molecules. The first light guide element includes a third transparent substrate including a side surface and a main surface, and a transparent layer disposed on the main surface and having a refractive index lower than that of the third transparent substrate. The light-emitting element opposes the side surface, and the third transparent substrate is adhered to the second transparent substrate while interposing the transparent layer therebetween. The light-emitting element is disposed on the second transparent substrate.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a liquid crystal layer between a first substrate and a second substrate. The first substrate includes a wiring line and a pixel electrode. The liquid crystal layer contains a stripe-shaped polymer extending in a first direction and a liquid crystal molecule. The liquid crystal layer contains a first polymer in an area overlapping the wiring line and a second polymer in an area overlapping the pixel electrode. The first polymer includes a first portion extending in a direction different from the first direction. The second polymer includes a second portion extending in a direction different from the first direction. A density of the first portion is higher than a density of the second portion.

Abstract: According to an aspect, a display device includes an image display panel including: sub-pixel rows, in each of which sub-pixels for displaying different colors are periodically arrayed in a first direction, are regularly arranged in a second direction different from the first direction; signal lines in parallel to sub-pixel columns in which the sub-pixels are successively arranged in the second direction; and scan lines that sequentially select each sub-pixel row. Each of m (integer ≥2) selector signals selects n (integer ≥1) pairs of the signal lines each supplied with two signals each having a mutually reverse polarity, within a period during which each sub-pixel row is selected by a corresponding scan line, and a sum of potential changes of the n pairs of the signal lines selected by each selector signal is substantially zero when each sub-pixel row is sequentially selected by the corresponding scan line.

Abstract: A display device includes a signal processing unit that receives input signals, and calculates output signals to a first sub-pixel, a second sub-pixel, a third sub-pixel, and a fourth sub-pixel. The signal processing unit calculates a frequency of pixels belonging to each of a plurality of partitions using a light quantity of a surface light source. The signal processing unit calculates an index value for each of the partitions by at least multiplying the cumulative frequency being obtained by sequentially adding the frequency of pixels from a partition having the maximum light quantity among the partitions, and the number of partitions representing a position of a partition to which the cumulative frequency belongs counted from the partition having the maximum light quantity. The signal processing unit controls luminance of the surface light source based on a partition in which the index value exceeds a threshold.
