A display device includes: an image display means for displaying left-eye images and right-eye images alternately; a light-shielding means for generating an effect of binocular parallax in images displayed by the image display means; and a detection means for detecting a position of an observer, wherein the light-shielding means includes an image transmitting portion through which images of the image display means are transmitted and an image non-transmitting portion through which images are not transmitted, which moves a position of the image transmitting portion by ½, ¼ or ⅛ of a light-shielding portion pitch prescribed by an arrangement interval of the image transmitting portion based on a detected result of the detection means.

A three-dimensional sense adjusting unit displays three-dimensional images to a user. If a displayed reaches a limit of parallax, the user responds to the three-dimensional sense adjusting unit. According to acquired appropriate parallax information, a parallax control unit generates parallax images to realize the appropriate parallax in the subsequent stereo display. The control of parallaxes is realized by optimally setting camera parameters by going back to three-dimensional data. Functions to realize the appropriate parallax are made into and presented by a library.

An image display includes polarization axis control means for separating light irradiated from a light source into light having a first polarization axis and another light having a second polarization axis different from the first polarization axis and a lens advancing the light having the first polarization axis and the light having the second polarization axis separated by the polarization axis control portion to have different polarization axes in prescribed directions respectively and including at least one lens portion formed to extend in a first direction intersecting with a line segment connecting the left and right eyes of an observer with each other.

By rotating a second camera (4) by a hinge (5) by 180 degrees so as to obtain an opening state, the second camera 4 faces a surface side. As a result, a first camera (3) and the second camera (4) are aligned horizontally, and use the same direction as a photographing range. When the second camera (4) is rotated, a system controller determines that a state is in a stereoscopic vision photographing mode. When a camera shutter is operated by a user, both the first camera (3) and the second camera (4) are allowed to perform a photographing process, and obtained two image data are stored in a memory after being attached to information indicating that the image is for the right eye and the image is for the left eye, and etc. Then, the two image data are transmitted by an e-mail function to a terminal of a communicating partner.

[problem] New functions including fade-in and fade-out are provided in view of particularity of three-dimensional image display. [means to solve the problem] During a fade-out process, a left-eye image (L image) is moved in a left direction while it is gradually reduced in size, and a right-eye image (R image) is moved in a right direction while it is gradually reduced in size. Thus, parallax between the L image and the R image is gradually increased. When the image is viewed through a 3D filter, it appears as if a subject to be displayed on a still image were gradually drawn in a depth direction. Furthermore, this effect can be magnified when the sizes of the L image and the R image are gradually reduced.

An image display provides a stereoscopic image to an observer by advancing either light having a first polarization axis or light having a second polarization axis toward the eyes of the observer while arranging a prescribed reference side of a display panel in a first direction, and provides another stereoscopic image to the observer by advancing either light having a third polarization axis or light having a fourth polarization axis toward the eyes of the observer while arranging the prescribed reference side of the display panel in a second direction intersecting with the first direction.

When “0” indicating that intensity of a stereoscopic effect is the lowest is applied as a stereoscopic effect tag, a stereoscopic image is allowed to be displayed as it is. On the other hand, when “1, 2, and 3” are applied as the stereoscopic effect tag, a reduction ratio is determined depending on a value of the stereoscopic effect tag (one-half, one-third, etc.). On the basis of this reduction ratio, the stereoscopic image is displayed and letters of “warning” are displayed. A user selects whether to display the stereoscopic image according to a producer's intention or to maintain the size-reduced stereoscopic image. If an operation requiring for a display of the stereoscopic image as it is intended by the producer is performed, an original stereoscopic image is displayed.

A camera placement determining unit determines a position at which a real, camera is placed in an object space, based on a z-value acquired in a frame immediately preceding a current frame and a user's appropriate parallax. After a projection processing, a parallax image generator generates parallax images based on viewpoint images. The z-value is acquired, in the immediately preceding frame, by at least one real camera positioned by the camera placement determining unit. Using this z-value in the current frame, the high-speed processing of three-dimensional images as a whole can be achieved.
