Abstract: A method and apparatus of image coding performed at an encoder or decoder using block prediction are disclosed. The block vector bit-count information associated with one or more block vectors (BVs) for the current block is determined, where the BVs are used to locate one or more block predictors for the current block. Prediction residuals corresponding to differences between the current block and the block predictors are determined. A first cost comprising the BV and residual bit-count information associated with encoding the prediction residuals using the first coding tool is determined. The second cost comprising the BV bit-count information and without the residual bit-count information is also determined. The derivation of the BV bit-count information and the prediction residuals for the current block are performed only once, and the BV bit-count information and the prediction residuals are used by the first coding tool and the second coding tool.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of encoding frames with a frame type structure adaptively according to a current encoding status after receiving a request for an IDR frame or receiving an indication of picture data loss are disclosed. If the check result of the current encoding status is true, the second frame type structure is the same as the first frame type structure; and if the check result of the current encoding status is false, the second frame type structure is different from the first frame type structure. Another method and apparatus of encoding frames with a reference frame structure and a frame type structure adaptively according to one or more current encoding statuses after receiving an indication of picture data loss are disclosed. The system may use two different check results to adaptively select the reference frame structure and the frame type structure.

Abstract: Method and apparatus of video coding using coding modes including Intra Block Copy (IntraBC) for a video coding system incorporating multi-stage pipeline processing is disclosed. In order to overcome data dependency issue due to the use of pipeline architecture, a first embodiment uses constrained previous reconstructed region for IntraBC estimation by excluding unavailable reconstructed previous reconstructed data due to the multi-stage pipeline processing. In the second embodiment, the unavailable reconstructed data is replaced by source pixel data.

Abstract: In order to overcome the issue caused by a decoded block vector (BV) pointing to a reference block overlapping with an unavailable area, various methods are disclosed. According to one method, if the reference block overlaps with an unavailable area, the reference pixels in the unavailable area are generated for IntraBC prediction of the current block by padding from neighbouring available pixels. The padding can be done in the horizontal direction and then the vertical direction. The padding may also done in the vertical direction first and then horizontal direction. In another method, if the reference block overlaps with an unavailable area, the reference pixels in the unavailable area are generated for IntraBC prediction of the current block by using previous decoded pixels in the unavailable area. A pre-defined value may also be used for the unavailable area.

Abstract: A method of IntraBC (Intra-block copy) coding for a coding region is disclosed. Embodiments of the present invention derive an IntraBC (Intra picture block copy) predictor from a constrained previous reconstructed region so as to reduce storage requirement for the previous reconstructed data. In one embodiment, a maximum absolute vertical BV (block vector) value, MaxV_BV is determined, where MaxV_BV is smaller than a full vertical search range for the coding region. A constrained previous reconstructed region corresponding to previous reconstructed samples processed before the current block is then determined, where the constrained previous reconstructed region includes at least MaxV_MV reconstructed samples in vertical direction above the current block and excludes at least one row of reconstructed samples for the current block with a vertical distance larger than MaxV_MV. Each coding block may correspond to a prediction unit (PU) or a coding unit (CU).

Abstract: A method and apparatus of sharing an on-chip buffer or cache memory for a video coding system using coding modes including Inter prediction mode or Intra Block Copy (IntraBC) mode are disclosed. At least partial pre-deblocking reconstructed video data of a current picture is stored in an on-chip buffer or cache memory. If the current block is coded using IntraBC mode, the pre-deblocking reconstructed video data of the current picture stored in the on-chip buffer or cache memory are used to derive IntraBC prediction for the current block. In some embodiments, if the current block is coded using Inter prediction mode, Inter reference video data from the previous picture stored in the on-chip buffer or cache memory are used to derive Inter prediction for the current block. In another embodiment, the motion compensation/motion estimation unit is shared by the two modes.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of encoding using multiple coding modes with multiple color spaces are disclosed. Weighted distortion is calculated for each candidate mode and a target mode is selected according to information including the weighted distortion. Each candidate coding mode is selected from a coding mode group including at least a first coding mode and a second coding mode, where the first coding mode uses a first color space for encoding one block and the second coding mode uses a second color space for encoding one block, and the first color space is different from the second color space. The weighted distortion corresponds to a weighted sum of distortions of color channels for each color transformed current block using a set of weighting factors and the set of weighting factors is derived based on a color transform associated with a corresponding color space for each coding mode.

Abstract: Method is disclosed for reducing frame buffer, stream buffer, reconstruction buffer, or latency associated with frame buffer compression in an encoder or decoder with multiple slices of an image frame. The image frame is divided into multiple slices vertically, horizontally or both. One core compressor or decompressor can be used to process two or more slices. The encoding and decoding of two or more slices may be performed in parallel. Instead of encoding an entire slice, the encoder compresses only partial data of one slice before encoding another slice. According to one embodiment, each slice is divided into two or more partitions. The encoder is switched to another slice after encoding one partition of one slice. In another embodiment, the encoder is switched to another slice based the information related to the coding status. The decoding order may be same as the encoding order.
