A process for preparing maleic anhydride by oxidizing n-butane in the gas phase under heterogeneous catalysis with oxygen-containing gases over a vanadium-, phosphorus- and oxygen-containing catalyst in a reactor unit at a temperature in the range from 350 to 500° C., removing the maleic anhydride formed to form a gas stream which comprises unconverted n-butane and water and recycling at least a portion of the unconverted n-butane to the reactor unit, by feeding to the reactor unit an inlet stream having an n-butane concentration of from 0.5 to 1.5% by volume and an oxygen concentration of from 5 to 21% by volume, establishing a pressure at the inlet to the reactor unit of from 0.4 to 2 MPa abs, and converting from 40 to 100% of the n-butane from the inlet stream per reactor pass.

Disclosed is a method for jointly producing (i) formic acid (III); (ii) a carboxylic acid comprising at least two carbon atoms (II) and/or the derivatives thereof; and (iii) a carboxylic acid anhydride (VII). According to said method, (a) a formic acid ester (I) is transesterfied to formic acid (III) and the corresponding carboxylic acid ester (IV) by means of a carboxylic acid comprising at least two carbon atoms (II); (b) at least one portion of the carboxylic acid ester (IV) formed in step (a) is carbonylated in order to obtain the carboxylic acid anhydride (V); and (c) at least one portion of the carboxylic acid anhydride (V) formed in step (b) is further dehydrated by means of a carboxylic acid (VI) so as to form a carboxylic acid anhydride (VII) and the carboxylic acid (II).

In a process for the preparation of acrolein and/or acrylic acid from propane, the propane is subjected, in a first reaction stage, to a partial oxydehydrogenation with molecular oxygen under homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysis to give propene and the product gas mixture formed in the first reaction stage is then used for the preparation of acrolein and/or acrylic acid by gas-phase catalytic propene oxidation.
