摘要: When data is reproduced by an apparatus which is different from an apparatus used for recording the data, the fluctuation of edge positions of the reproducing data increases, making reproduction incompatible, and the present invention solves this problem. The present invention comprises reproducing learning means 13 and 24 for switching a frequency characteristic of the reproducing system, which detects the changes of the local optical constant, to a predetermined frequency characteristic, and recording learning means 20 for correcting the start edge or end edge position of the recording pulse for each combination of length of a mark block and length of the preceding or subsequent space, so that the edge position of the binarized reproducing data comes to a desired position, and since the frequency characteristic of the reproducing system is unified before learning the edge shift amount caused by the thermal interference between marks, the length of the recorded marks and spaces can always be constant, which improves the reproducing compatibility among reproducing apparatuses.

摘要: An optical information recording apparatus, an optical information recording method, and an optical information recording medium that enable information signals to be recorded precisely by determining recording conditions such as recording power, edge positions of recording pulses, and the like suitably before recording information signals. An edge test signal generation circuit supplies a test signal for optimizing edge positions of recording pulses. In order to suppress the variation in intervals between edges due to mark distortion caused by overwriting, test recording is carried out using this test signal in a plurality of sectors on the optical information recording medium with a test recording start point being shifted at random in each sector by a recording start point shifting circuit. A system control circuit calculates an average of intervals between edges in test signals reproduced from the plurality of sectors and determines the difference between the average and an original interval between edges in the test signal, thus determining a compensation volume for edge positions.

摘要: The present invention provides a measure for getting read/write control information stored within a space of a predetermined size in a format that ensures compatibility with media of a lower order or an older generation even if the size of the read/write control information increases significantly as the storage densities of information storage media rise in the near future. On an information storage medium, a data sequence is writable as a combination of marks and spaces. The medium has at least one information storage layer, which has an information storage area to store information and a control information area for use to perform a read/write operation on the at least one information storage layer. The control information area stores at least one set of control information, which includes a first kind of write pulse information including information to be used as a reference value and a second kind of write pulse information including information to be used as an offset value. If the pulse width or pulse position of a write pulse is definable with a precision of 1T/n (where T is a channel clock pulse width and n is a positive integer), the size of the offset value is large enough to define at least an n/2 range.

摘要: An optical disc apparatus for recording, reproducing or erasing an information signal by converging a light flux onto a recording layer through a transparent substrate. The apparatus includes one or a plurality of optical heads having a plurality of objective lenses whose aberrations have respectively been corrected for a plurality of disc substrates of different thicknesses, a cartridge for enclosing the optical disc, a discrimination hole which is formed on the cartridge, and a sensor for detecting the opening/closing state of the discrimination hole and for generating a discrimination signal. In accordance with the result of the discrimination as to the thickness of the loaded optical disc, the objective lens, in which the occurrence of the aberration is smallest, is used, so that the information signal can preferably be recorded, reproduced or erased onto/from the optical discs having different substrate thicknesses. Instead of an optical head having objective lenses, an optical head having a waveguide and a plurality of converging grating couplers whose aberrations have respectively been corrected for a plurality of disc substrates of different thicknesses is provided to achieve the same object. An optical recording/reproducing apparatus for recording, reproducing or erasing an information signal onto/from an optical disc having at least a transparent substrate and an information layer by converging a light flux on the information layer through the transparent substrate. The apparatus includes optical converging devices, with different numerical apertures, focal distances or working distances, such as objective lenses or grating lenses, for performing aberration correction over a plurality of transparent substrates of different thicknesses of optical discs and a device for discriminating the type of optical disc based on the thicknesses of the transparent substrates. One of the optical converging devices that generates the least aberration is used according to a result of the discrimination of the thickness of the optical disk loaded in the apparatus to cause the information signal to be suitably recorded, reproduced or erased onto/from the optical discs having the different substrate thicknesses.
