    摘要: A magnetic recording medium is formed with a distribution of low coercivity regions functioning as a transition pattern for servo information capable of being sensed by a read/write head by exposing a masked magnetic layer to ions to change the coercivity of the exposed magnetic layer without substantially affecting the topography of the magnetic layer.Embodiments of the present invention include forming a series of substantially radially extending low coercivity regions used to divide the magnetic layer into a plurality of sectors comprising substantially concentric circumferentially extending data tracks by exposing a masked magnetic layer having a high coercivity, i.e. from about 2000 Oe to about 10000 Oe, to one or more heavy atom ion bombardments of gaseous ions, e.g. argon ions, at a dose of about 1×1013 atoms/cm2 to about 9×1015 atoms/cm2 having an implantation energy of about 10 KeV to about 50 KeV.

    摘要: A disc storage system includes a rotating disc and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider which is supported by an armature. The armature is used to move the slider radially across the disc surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc surface of the transducer. The slider includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc surface. As the disc rotates, the air bearing surface causes the slider to “fly” over the disc surface. Pads are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system. For example, the pads may be used to reduce the stiction or improve flying characteristics. Flying instabilities associated with the pads are addressed by a number of characteristics provided to the air bearing surface.

    摘要: Magnetic recording media exhibiting high SNR and high thermal stability are produced by sputter depositing a magnetic alloy overlying a non-magnetic substrate, e.g., on an underlayer, heating to eliminate thermally unstable small grains thereby increasing the average grain size of the magnetic alloy layer but narrowing the grain size distribution, depositing a layer comprising a non-ferromagnetic element, and then heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element into the grain boundaries of the heat treated magnetic alloy layer. Embodiments include sputter depositing a magnetic alloy layer comprising Co and Pt on an underlayer, heating at a temperature of about 150° C. to about 600° C. to increase the average grain size to about 8 to about 10 nm, depositing a layer comprising Cr, Mn or Ta, at a thickness up to about 25 Å, e.g., up to about 10 Å, on the magnetic alloy layer and heating to diffuse the Cr, Mn or Ta into the grain boundaries of the magnetic alloy layer. Embodiments further include heating to diffuse the non-ferromagnetic element leaving a layer comprising the non-ferromagnetic element, at a thickness up to about 3 Å, on the magnetic alloy layer, with the amount of the non-ferromagnetic element diffused into the grain boundaries of the magnetic alloy layer gradually decreasing from the upper surface of the magnetic alloy layer toward the underlayer.

    摘要: A method of simultaneously forming magnetic transition patterns in both side surfaces of a dual-sided magnetic or magneto-optical (MO) recording medium comprises steps of:(a) providing a dual-sided magnetic or MO recording medium having first and second opposing side surfaces;(b) providing a first magnetic stamper/imprinter having a first topographically patterned imprinting surface comprising a plurality of projections and depressions arranged in a first pattern corresponding to a first magnetic transition pattern to be formed in the first side surface;(c) providing a second magnetic stamper/imprinter having a second topographically patterned imprinting surface comprising a plurality of projections and depressions arranged in a second pattern corresponding to a second magnetic transition pattern to be formed in the second side surface, the second magnetic stamper/imprinter being formed from the first magnetic stamper/imprinter in a “mother”/“son” relationship;(d) contacting the first side surface with the first topographically patterned imprinting surface of the first magnetic stamper/imprinter;(e) contacting the second side surface with the second topographically patterned imprinting surface of the second magnetic stamper/imprinter; and(f) simultaneously forming magnetic transition patterns in both side surfaces of the medium by contact printing.

A corrosion-resistant protective overcoat layer may be present on the topographically patterned surface. A method for manufacturing the stamper/imprinter is also disclosed.
