A recording medium comprises a substrate and a recording layer overlaid on the substrate. The recording layer comprises a material, which has properties such that, when recording light having a predetermined wavelength λ1 is irradiated to the material, the material is capable of being caused to change into a fluorescent material and such that, when excitation light having a wavelength λ2 is then irradiated to the thus formed fluorescent material, the fluorescent material is capable of being caused to produce fluorescence. The wavelength λ1 of the recording light and the wavelength λ2 of the excitation light may be identical or different. The substrate may be constituted of a material having properties such that, when the excitation light is irradiated to the material, the material does not produce fluorescence having a wavelength identical with the wavelength of the fluorescence produced by the fluorescent material.

A hole 4 having a diameter larger than a width W of a desired groove 6 and a depth deeper than the desired depth of the groove 6 is formed in an end face 2 of a rod 1. Subsequently, the groove 6 is formed by plastic deformation to partially overlap the hole 4. The plastic working to form the groove may be carried without the use of a die.

In the production of stainless steel it is aimed at to depress the highest temperature reaching during refining the molten steel with keeping the necessary tapping temperature so as to prolong the life of refractory materials of the refining furnace. After carrying out decarburization treatment under atmospheric pressure in a refining furnace by blowing an oxygen-containing gas into molten steel, further decarburization of the molten steel and reduction of chromium oxides is carried out under stirring by blowing a non-oxidizing gas under a reduced pressure, and then, reducing agent is charged into the furnace to reduce chromium oxides under keeping the reduced pressure. At the above atmospheric pressure operation total quantity of the oxygen gas blown is smaller than in a conventional process, while at the final stage of the reduced pressure operation an oxygen-containing gas is blown again in the quantity which is equivalent to the balance of the quantity of oxygen gas usually blown in the conventional process and the quantity of oxygen gas blown at the above atmospheric pressure operation so as to cause heat generation by oxidation reaction of chromium thereby increasing molten steel temperature to a necessary temperature with anticipation of subsequent temperature decrease.

The dye of formula (I) colors a specific hydrophilic colloidal layer without being diffused to other layers and is rapidly decolorized or washed off on development processing.
