A wheel alignment apparatus has measurement heads for determining wheel positions of wheels of a motor vehicle. Each measurement head comprises at least one camera which is the direct to a measurement target arranged in the field of view of the camera and positioned in a well defined relationship to the wheel of the motor vehicle. Pictures taken by the camera are evaluated by an evaluation unit in order to determined the spatial position of the measurement target and, thereby, the wheel with respect to the position of the camera and the measurement head respectively. Apparatus and method for determining the alignment of a wheel of a vehicle includes mounting a known optical target to a wheel on the vehicle, the known optical target having a plurality of optical elements, each optical element having at least one straight edge disposed on a background, obtaining at least one video image of the optical target, estimating from the video image of the optical target the characteristics in said video image of a plurality of lines corresponding to projections onto the video image of the straight edges of the optical elements, and determining from the estimates of the characteristics the alignment of the wheel. A similar target for determining the position of a runway on which the vehicle is positioned is also disclosed.

The optical sensing means view a target located on each object and form an image of each target. Electronic signals corresponding to each of the images are transferred to the electronic processing means which correlates the image signals of each of the targets with the true shape of each target. An apparatus and method for determining axial stability compares measured wheel runout and axial instability parameters with prescribed tolerances to determine if the wheel suffers from excessive wheel play. Axial stability and runout is determined and displayed on a monitor screen such that an alignment technician can quickly assess both the degree of present wheel misalignment and the feasibility of attempting to perform a realignment operation without first repairing worn or damaged suspension parts. The attitude and location of a wheel are measured with the wheel set in a first position to determine a first vector having a predetermined relation to the wheel. The wheel is rolled back a number of degrees to a second position and the attitude and location thereof are measured to determine a second vector also having the predetermined relation to the wheel. Rearward axis parameters including a rearward rotational axis vector and a rearward runout vector are determined based on the first and second vectors. The wheel is rolled forward to a third position which is substantially equal to the first position and the attitude and location of the wheel are measured to determine a third vector also having the predetermined relation to the wheel. Forward axis parameters, including a forward rotational axis vector and a forward runout vector, are determined based on the second and third vectors. Dynamic stability vectors including a rotational axis stability vector and a runout stability vector are determined based on the forward and rearward axis parameters.

An apparatus and method for monitoring and automatically calibrating the primary sensors of a vehicle wheel aligner comprises secondary sensors for signaling the control means of the wheel aligner when the wheels are in known angular orientations. The outputs from the primary angle determining sensors of the wheel aligner are recorded when the secondary sensors signal the control means, and the control means calculates a calibration relationship between the outputs and the known angles to apply to future outputs of the primary sensors.

A laser telemeter is driven on two mutually orthogonal axes by stepper motor assemblies to acquire targets mounted at predetermined points on a vehicle. The distances to the targets and the angular orientations are obtained. A computer equipped with a microprocessor controls the movement of the stepper motors by storing in memory the number of steps made during rotation about each axis, and calculates, from the distance between the telemeter and each point, and from the angles of rotation of the beam between the various points measured, the distance between at least two points. These are automatically compared with known standard distances to obtain discrepancies which indicate the deformation of the vehicle. The targets can be disks with back-reflective material thereon as a peripheral ring and a central dot.
