摘要: An elongated light-guiding element includes opposed incident and emission ends between which light propagates by total internal reflection. The light-guiding element includes a glass core with first and second glass core ends and a glass-core outer surface. A non-glass polymeric optical layer extends over at least a portion of the length of the glass core and is disposed peripherally thereabout. The optical layer has first and second optical-layer ends and an optical-layer exterior surface extending between the first and second optical-layer ends. The glass core and the polymeric optical layer exhibit indices of refraction that are matched to one another as closely as practicable such that the combination of the glass core and the optical layer exhibits optical properties similar to those that would be exhibited by an optical element of similar shape and dimensions fabricated from a single, continuous mass of optical material having a refractive index equal to the that of the glass core material.

摘要: A light-emitting form comprises an elongated light guide illuminated by a light source (10a) such as an LED that sheds light into the end of the light guide. The light guide comprises a tubular light-transmitting container (30) consisting essentially of a substantially amorphous polymer, and an elongated light-transmitting core (20), which may be liquid, with an index of refraction lower than the index of refraction of the container. The light guide exhibits an aura, wherein the outside surface of the container (30) illuminates its surroundings and appears to glow, rather like neon lighting tubes.

摘要: A solid-state laser emitting material for use in conjunction with a light source includes a polymer matrix functioning as host materials, containing laser dye of rhodamine 590 or rhodamine 610 as gain materials and nano-submicron particles as scatters therein. The lowest lasing threshold of the laser emitting material is approximately 5 mJ/cm2 for 585 nm emission and 2 mJ/cm2 for 630 nm emission.

摘要: A light emitting apparatus of the present invention includes: an EL emitting unit including at least a light emitting layer which generates an EL light; and a pair of light blocking layers arranged such that they sandwich the light emitting layer so that the layers block the EL light generated in the light emitting layer and that the EL light is radiated only from the end of the light emitting layer; and a light emitting unit which optically guides the EL light radiated from the end of the light emitting layer and emits a light having a wavelength equal to or different from that of the EL light. The EL light is emitted only from the end of the light emitting layer since the EL light generated in the light emitting layer is blocked by the pair of light blocking layers. This emitted EL light is optically guided by the light emitting unit and emitted as it is or a light having a different wavelength from the EL light.

摘要: An optical waveguide module includes a light emitting element which outputs light, a light receiving element which monitors an output of the light emitting element, and an optical waveguide film having a waveguide core which has a notched portion having an optical path changing surface that changes an optical path of part of the light. The light emitting element is coupled to an end portion of the optical waveguide film, and the light receiving element is provided to face a position of the optical waveguide film from where the part of the light whose optical path has been changed by the optical path changing surface exits.

摘要: The invention is directed to an optical element and techniques for creating the optical element. The optical element may comprise an optical delay line or a similar optical part. The optical element may have a wide variety of applications in optical data transmission, optical computing, short term transient storing, applications for optical timing, or a number of other applications. Rather than drawing a long length of optical fiber, the invention can make use of mastering and replication techniques to define a long continuous groove in a substrate. Alternatively, an etching process may be used. In either case, the groove is filled with an optical material of higher index of refraction than the substrate to define a light guide that can transmit light via total internal reflection (TIR).

摘要: A fiber optic article, such as an optical fiber or an optical preform, can include a core comprising a concentration of erbium, a concentration of fluorine and a concentration of ytterbium for sensitizing the erbium by absorbing pump light and transferring energy to the erbium. The erbium can provide light having a second wavelength different than the wavelength of the pump light. The article can also include a concentration of phosphorus. The fiber optic article can include a cladding disposed about the core, where the cladding has an index of refraction that is less than the index of refraction of the core, and a second cladding disposed about the first cladding, where the second cladding includes an index of refraction than is less than the index of refraction of the cladding. The fiber optic article can be elongate along a longitudinal axis and can include a longitudinally extending region for providing birefringence.
