    Abstract: An image reading apparatus includes a moving unit, a first detecting unit, and a second detecting unit. The moving unit moves a calibration plate in the main scanning direction relatively to a reading apparatus. The calibration plate is a plate for calibrating the reading apparatus. The reading apparatus has a reading unit and reading glass. The reading unit is arranged in the main scanning direction. The reading glass is disposed on a reading surface side of the reading unit. The first detecting unit detects an abnormality on the calibration plate from reading results. The reading results are obtained in such a manner that, while the moving unit is controlled to move the calibration plate, the reading unit reads the calibration plate. The second detecting unit detects an abnormality on the reading glass from the reading results.

    Abstract: An image scanner includes a transparent plate, a scanning device, a driving device, a positioning member, a light absorbing portion and a white reference portion. The transparent plate has an original placing surface. The scanning device irradiates an original with light by means of a light source and scans reflected light from the original. The driving device reciprocates the scanning device along the transparent plate. The positioning member positions the original placed on the original placing surface of the transparent plate. The light absorbing portion, which is disposed on the original placing surface side of the positioning member and at substantially a central portion of the positioning member in moving directions of the scanning device, absorbs ambient light entering to the original placing surface side of the positioning member through the transparent plate. The white reference portion is provided to the original placing surface side of the positioning member.

    Abstract: Devices and methods calibrate an optical scanner by having the scanner scan a calibration surface. The scanner includes a lens causing a distortion of items scanned. During the calibration process, such devices and methods perform a compensation process to remove the distortion from signals output by the scanner when performing the scanning to identify at least one surface irregularity on the calibration surface. After performing the compensation process, the devices and methods adjust the calibration process (using the processor) to apply correction for pixels affected by the surface irregularity. Then, after adjusting the calibration settings, such devices and methods finalize the calibration process and store the scanner settings, again using the processor.

    Abstract: An image reading device having an improved shading compensation capability and a method thereof are disclosed. The image reading device includes an automatic document feed unit to deliver documents along a document delivery path. A light source unit including a light source to illuminate a first criterion image at a first position within the image reading device, and to illuminate the documents delivered by the automatic document feed unit at a second position. The image reading device further includes a second criterion image arranged to opposingly face the light source unit when the light source unit is located at the second position. The second criterion image extends along a sufficient length to cover the scanning range of the light illumination by the light source unit along a main scanning direction. An image acquisition unit is provided to acquire criterion shading data, auxiliary shading data and image data by receiving light reflected from the first criterion image, the second criterion image and the documents, respectively. A control unit is able to update the criterion shading data using the auxiliary shading data, and to use the updated criterion shading data to compensate the image data.
