A current supply device for movable electrodes of spark erosion machines comprises a plurality of individual contacts and includes in leads connecting the contacts with a current generator, electrical components in the form of pulse transformers for a pairwise negative feedback of partial currents or additional impedances stepped according to a mathematical series for uniform current distribution over the individual contacts. The current supply device is particularly suitable for the current transmission of high energy short pulses, such as are used for an erosive wire cutting. The current supply device operates in an almost wear-free manner and can also fulfill the function of guide for the electrode.

A device for machining by electroerosion has a tool electrode driven in a rotary motion controlled by a servomotor and showing the shape of a solid of revolution around its axis of rotation. A measuring circuit continuously evaluates the degree of contamination of the machining dielectric liquid in relation to a reference value. The measurement is made by a transducer for the instantaneous voltage U.sub.i of each spark and by comparing it to a predetermined value U.sub.b, thus determining the proportion of so-called low-level sparks for which U.sub.i .ltoreq.U.sub.b, a signal being delivered when this proportion surpasses a predetermined threshold, or by a current transductor working during the waiting time preceding the striking of each spark, a signal being delivered when a predetermined current threshold is attained. A servo circuit modulates the rotation speed of the tool electrode as a function of this signal. The detector makes it possible to detect and remedy the appearance of ejected sparks.

A wire cut electric discharge machine for electric discharge machining a work (W) held on a work table (24). A wire electrode (14) supplied by a wire supplying device (12) is passed between upper and lower heads (22, 26) under tension through an electric discharge machining region where the work (W) is subjected to electric discharge machining. When a breakage of the wire electrode is detected during the electric discharge machining operation by a suitable detector, the broken wire electrode is drawn back and held in the neighborhood of the upper head (22) by a wire electrode feeding mechanism, the broken end of the wire electrode is detected outside the electric discharge machining region by a broken end detecting device (66), the work table is shifted by a XY driving mechanism from the electric discharge machining region to a predetermined wire repairing position, the broken end is cut and removed to repair the wire electrode with a cutter (60) and a cutting block (64) at a wire electrode repairing position separated from the electric discharge machining region, the work table is returned to the electric discharge machining region by the XY driving mechanism, the repaired wire electrode (14) is extended again between the upper and lower heads (22, 24) by means of a jet nozzle (74), and then the electric discharge machining operation is restarted.

In a wire cut electric discharge machine, an apparatus is provided, which is capable of detecting completion of wire setting with a simple construction when a wire electrode (W) is automatically extended. Electric power is supplied to the wire electrode (W) from an electric power supplying section (43) through a contact (32) during automatic wire setting. When the wire electrode (W) is fed and brought into contact with an iron plate (44) disposed at a side at which the wire electrode (W) is taken out, an electric potential at the iron plate (44) of the electric power supplied section increases, to thereby detect completion of wire setting.

A method for wire electrode type electrical discharge machining and equipment employable therefor realize high accuracy in corner machining, such machining being conducted in combination with taper machining. The tension to be applied to a wire electrode is controlled in proportion to a change in Young's modulus of the wire electrode in addition to decreasing the machining current, whenever a corner machining and a taper machining are conducted in combination. The equipment for wire electrode type electrical discharge machining includes a memory for memorizing information indicating the relationship between the machining current and the amount of tension which is optimum to the machining current, a monitor for monitoring the electric discharge machining current, an optimum tension calculating device for calculating the tension optimum to the monitored machining current, and a tension control device for controlling the tension of the wire electrode in response to the calculated optimum tension.

A wire guidance arrangement for guiding a wire electrode of a spark erosion machine has several replaceable wire guides, which are mutually spaced to thereby form individual erosion zones. The individual wire guides are held by spring tension in corresponding openings of a guide plate, which rest on a base block. The common plane of the guide plate and the base block forms a reference plane on which are axially centered the undersides of wire guidance members of the individual wire guides. Even in the case of a greater wire electrode fixing length, this always ensures a satisfactory guidance of the wire electrode. In addition, the individual wire guides can be simply replaced without any adjustment being necessary.

A wire-cut electric discharge machine, which displays a workable time (T) of a currently used wire electrode (2). A wire length when the wire is mounted on a bobbin (B1) and a wire feed speed are input through a manual input unit (7) and are stored in memory (6). During working (i.e., machining), a CPU (5) calculates a new, remaining wire length (L) from the wire length when the wire is mounted on the bobbin or a remaining wire length (L) and a wire feed speed (V) for predetermined time periods (step S1). A workable time (T) is calculated from the new, remaining wire length (L) and the wire feed speed (V) by the CPU (5), and is displayed by a display unit (8) (steps S2 and S3).

A wire-cut EDM method and apparatus in which an electrode wire traveling between a pair of wire-positioning guide members is laterally advanced, generally tangentially along a workpiece contour disposed therebetween to electro-erosively cut a precision contour in the workpiece contour with a depth of cut at most equal to the diameter of the wire. The fluctuating machining pressure, induced by the gap erosive electrical discharges and fluid injection, tends to undulate the traveling wire in the open space flanking the contour being cut and to misalign the axial position thereof away from a prescribed path of advance in the cutting zone. A rotary mechanism, rotatable about its axis of rotation coinciding with the straight-line path established for the traveling wire axis between the wire positioning guide members, carries a wire-backing support member disposed in the cutting zone and having wire supporting surfaces parallel to that straight-line path to hold the traveling wire against the machining pressure, and is rotated to orient the wire-backing support member so as to oppose those surfaces with the area of contour being cut and to avoid a collision of the support member with the workpiece.

To regulate the flushing liquid medium in the cutting zone of a TW electroerosion apparatus an elongate element is introduced into the cutting slot formed behind the advancing wire electrode and is maintained immediately behind the wire electrode and in parallel therewith, and thus dams the flushing medium in the space between the wire electrode and the element while serving to hold the wire electrode against deflecting rearwards. The elongate element is advantageously a tube having one or more apertures formed in a lateral wall thereof juxtaposed with the wire electrode, through which apertures the cutting liquid medium is discharged into the cutting zone and/or the flushing liquid medium in the cutting zone is sucked to assure an equalized distribution in the rate of flow in the cutting zone across the thickness of the workpiece. During a course of the cutting operation, the elongate element may be axially moved or reciprocated, or laterally oscillated.
